Is it legal for residents of Argentina to play
online poker for U.S. dollars in Argentina?
I.e., can a resident of Argentina legally go
online and play at partypoker.com? Clarification -- I do not want to
know if it is legal to operate an online poker website in Argentina. |

sharpshooter22-ga,
I have a question for you...Is it legal for residents of the US to
play poker online?
The question has no easy or clearcut answer, as far as I know. People
in the US certainly DO play poker online. And I'm not aware that
anyone has ever been charged with wrongdoing. But that doesn't mean
that the practice is legal...it seems to occupy some very murky legal
territory.
It would be even more difficult to work out the legalities in other
countries. It's probably fair to say that most legal systems have not
yet caught up with internet gambling. If gambling is totally
prohibited in some country, then probably internet gambling is too.
But if some forms of gambling are legal, then internet gaming probably
occupies the same murky legal territory as it does in the US.
You might want to consider rephrasing your numerous questions along
the lines -- how common is online poker playing in Argentina, etc.
I'm not sure that the question is readily answered in that form. But
at least it has a shot of being answered. I don't think the strictly
legal approach will get you very far.
Just my two cents worth of advice...

I appreciate your comment. You're right, in most states in the US it
is not completely clear whether online poker is legal (my
understanding is that online lotteries and bookmaking are a violation
of the federal Wire Act and are therefore illegal in all states).
Unfortunately, the question of how prevalent online poker is in any of
the particular countries I have inquired about will not help me -- I
need to know whether it is actually legal. Murky is not good for my
purposes, so if that's the answer I need to know it. I was hoping to
perhaps get answers from people who are from the countries I have
asked about (I don't know how diversified google researchers are). I
am in the process of consulting attorneys in the various countries,
but thought this could be another avenue of information. So I'll have
to stick to my strictly legal approach. Thanks!
