I'm looking for a songe made entirely of telephone dial tones. I heard
it about 20 years ago. It may be part of something else.

Is this it?

"Telephone Line / Electric Light Orchestra / 1976 (Doug Kelly)
The only song featuring the sound of telephone dialing tones triggered
by a blue box."

No, this is not it ... I have the album of ELO with this song on it.

I can distinctly remember a sequence of notes. If only there were a
way to get it from my head into the PC.
I cannot read/write notes, but I believe it's something like :
C-E-C-E-C-C where the second C is short and there is a gap between the
last two C's. It may be other notes than C and E, but there is a low
note and a high note.
The notes are actual recordings from existing telephone systems in the
80's. I believe that they we're from the English UK system.

I'm not sure if it is really a song. Maybe it was just a short jingle
or so. (Maybe from a DJ on one of our shows on Hilversum 3 in The
Netherlands)

How about "The Telephone Call" by Kraftwerk?

"Electric Cafe" [click on "The Telephone Call" for a sample]

If this is correct, please let me know so that I may post it as an answer.

Nope, sorry. Have that album too.
What I remember is made entirely out of telephone sounds. No synthesizer added.
I think I remember it being of Swiss origin, but that memory is not reliable.

I've found the Penguin Cafe Orchestra track to which markm0's comment
likely refers:

"Telephone and Rubber Band"
Yahoo! Audio Search

Is the correct song?

Jackpot !!!!! The sample shows exactly the part I'm looking for. I
didn't remember the violins though.

Thanks,
Peter

I think the song is written by the Penguin cafe orchestra which
specilised in repeating layers of music. I can't rememer exactly but
the track may have been called calling from home. Hope this helps.
