Hi, Bobbie -- I'm heading down to Chile again and you've supplied
great shopping info before, so here's a new one. Can you track down
the best price/source for this sunblock in Santiago: La Roche Posay
Anthelios 60+ XL with Mexoryl, 100ml. I bought out the last tube in a
drug store last summer there and had to fly back to the U.S. before I
could find any more.
I only want that brand and I don't want the "Fluide Extreme" or 4o+ or
any other products. And I don't want the "L," only the XL. The
Anthelios comes in 50 ml (which is what I found), but I really want
the 100 ml size. And I want the creme or "lait"(the label is
sometimes in French, but I got one in Spanish, too).

The day I went shopping for it, it was a Sunday and none of the
drugstores were open, so maybe you can get the stuff anywhere. I
finally found one tube in a drugstore on the way to the Los Domenicos
market. Can't remember the name. It was about $17.00 U.S. for the 50
ml.

So, my question is. . . can you find me a source where can I be
guaranteed to find the stuff and lots of it and at a good price. I've
been ordered to bring back a gazillion tubes for friends and family
because the FDA hasn't approved Mexoryl in this country yet and people
are buying Anthelios on eBay and a few stores are selling it for
$50-60 bucks under the counter. Now that I know it's in Chile at
probably half the price, I'm determined to stock up.

I don't need to know for another week, so you have time to scope it out.
Will be staying in Provedencia, if that helps, but am willing to travel
for a great deal. But then maybe this kind of thing is a fixed price
everywhere? If so, then at least find me sources where I can buy a
LOT of it.
Thanks.

Hi Cryptica!

Please let me know if this is the right cream.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0009VRACQ/103-8989118-0440621?v=glance

If it is, I'll call a few drug chains and see if they have them in stock.

Thanks,
Bobbie7

Bobbie --
Yep, that's the right stuff, but the wrong size. That's the 50ml size
(small) tube and I want the 100ml size (large) tube. If there is a
local distributor I could buy from directly, to avoid the middle man,
that would be ideal. Like some places will sell you a case of
something, rather than making you buy 1 at a time. I suppose we
should go on La Roche Posay's website and see if there's a Santiago
distributor?

Cryptica,

I called the three largest drug store chains and none of them had the
Anthelios 60+ cream. One did have La Roche Posay Helioblock 60 XL and
La Roche Posay Anthelios 30. Both were 50 mg. They cost about 21
dollars each.
(11,250-11,530 pesos using the exchange rate of 540 pesos per dollar.)

Getting in touch with the distributor is a good idea. I won't be able to do so
until Tuesday because Monday is a holiday and everything is closed.

How many 100 ml creams would you need?

Would you be interested in the 50 ml size if the 100 ml size isn't available?

According to this website Ximena Reyes is the Director of La Roche Posay in Chile.
http://www.med.uchile.cl/ofdes/noticias/aula3.html

I found a phone number for Ximena Reyes and will call on Tuesday.

I believe that Lóreal is the distributor of La Roche-Posay
I also have their phone number and will call them as well.

Good work, Bobbie. I know somebody has to have the 60+, because I
bought it last summer. I just I just looked in my files to see if I
kept the receipt. So far all I found is a note that I found it
at a pharmacia on Tomas Mora Avenue that was the only one open on
Sunday. I paid 11,200 pesos for a 50 ml tube. Much cheaper than
here, but not a thrill.

Depending on how much it cost, I could see myself buying say, 4 dozen
Anthelios's's's's's.
(I'm too tired to deal with the apostrophe tonight.) A lot of people
told me to buy as much as I could carry.

But I doubt I'm going to want to go from drugstore to drugstore to buy
3 here and 2 there,
which is why I'm hoping I could get them from the distributor. They
probably come in boxes of
some #. . . so that's what I'd need to know. I'm not a dealer, so I
don't want them to think I'm
a small business. These would be gifts.

I guess if forced to, yes, I'd deal in the 50 ml size, but I'm hoping
for the regular size 100 ml tube.

This is the best sunscreen you can buy, which is why it's in such demand.

What's the holiday??

Request for Question Clarification by bobbie7-ga on 12 Aug 2005 20:06 PDT
Cryptica,

I called the drug store again and they confirmed that La Roche Posay
products are distributed by Loreal Chile.

They also said that it may be hard to find sunblock creams right now
because it's winter here. During September and October they usually
stock up on these kind of products in preparation for summer.

If my daughters go to the mall this weekend I'll ask them to go into
the drugstore and see if they carry your cream.

I'll also call Loreal on Tuesday.

I just called a "farmacia Salcobrand" that is located on Tomas Moro
Street and unfortunately they didn't have your cream. They only have
Helioblock.

Clarification of Question by cryptica-ga on 12 Aug 2005 20:25 PDT
I see what you mean about there not being a big call for sunscreen in
the winter. But then again, skiers need sunscreen, (which is why I'll
be in Chile), so let's hope the stores would keep some around for the
slope-bound.

hold on! This just in! I found my credit card receipt from last
year: I bought the Anthelios at

SALCOBRAND on Tomas Moro. Was Salcobrand one of the chains you talked to?

Request for Question Clarification by bobbie7-ga on 12 Aug 2005 20:29 PDT
Yes, Salcobrand was one of the chains I called. I even called the
Salcobrand on Tomas Moro.

Well, let's hope Loreal has them in stock and are willing to sell a case.

When will you be in Chile? (if they ask for an approximate date.)

Clarification of Question by cryptica-ga on 12 Aug 2005 20:47 PDT
Salcobrand has let me down?! Oh, no. The interesting thing is that
they had the Anthelios behind the counter at the pharmacy -- where you
get the prescriptions. It wasn't on a shelf or on display.

Well, I'm glad I'm posing the question now, so if it's not to be had,
I don't go around wasting time looking for it!

I'll be in Chile starting August 27th, but won't be in Santiago until
Saturday afternoon, September 3rd. I'll also be there Sunday the 4th
(I know nothing's open) and all day Monday, Sept. 5th.

I called another SalcoBrand an hour ago and they said they had two La
Roche Posay Anthelios 60+,(50 ml) but there was nothing on the box
about Mexoryl so I guess it's not the one.

I'll let you know what Loreal has to say on Tuesday.

Here's a list of Salcobrand stores in Providencia. I would suggest you
print out this list and check out these stores on Monday September 5th
before you leave Santiago. (That's if I didn't find anything until
then)

"The interesting thing is that they had the Anthelios behind the

Yes, that's where they keep these kind of products that are more
expensive and usually recommended by a dermatologist. Normal stuff
like Coppertone or Banana Boat are on display in the front of the
store.

Clarification of Question by cryptica-ga on 13 Aug 2005 06:02 PDT
The XL designation is the key. Anthelios 60+ XL means it has the Mexoryl XL.
People keep thinking they'll get in cheaper in Canada, but Canada only
sells the "L,"
which isn't as powerful and they get ripped off. "SX" isn't either.

It gets confusing because there's XL "creme" and "lait" and "fluide extreme."
The creme is the thickest, which is what I like, but it's really hard to find.
I mostly own the "lait," (milk or lotion), which is thick, too and I
did buy once the "Fluide Extreme," which is light and for the face and
I didn't think it was so great. I want the heavy goop. It's amazing.

Oh, yeah, and then there's the 60+ XL TINTED, which looks the same on
the box, but you have to look carefully for the notation that it's
tinted. I don't want tinted.

Looking closer at the Amazon link you gave me, it says Sunblcok for
the Face. . . which explains all the 50 ml sizes. When you buy it in
100ml it says "Sunblock for face and body." It does look like it's
getting more difficult to find the 100 ml size than the 50 ml, but
it's more cost effective.

I want total sunBLOCK. As you pointed out, there are Anthelios
Helioblcok 60+ and other 60+ by them, but unless it has the XL in the
title, it doesn't have the Mexoryl.

And now that you know about this stuff, you should get some for
yourself and your daughters!

I just talked to another SalcoBrand store.

They said that they have three 50 ml tubes of Helioblock Anthelios 60+ XL cream.

I haven´t seen it myself but it should look like this image here:
http://www.fec.com.br/fec/imagens/ia/033855.jpg

Could this be the same cream that you need even though it says Helioblock?

They also said that the 100ml size is not available here.

Clarification of Question by cryptica-ga on 13 Aug 2005 14:49 PDT
Maybe Helioblock is Anthelios in South America? I just found this on
the L'oreal Paris website:

"The international development of La Roche-Posay outside Western
Europe gathered speed to reach +55%, thanks to the opening of new
subsidiaries in Brazil and Mexico. This rapid development in Latin
America was boosted in 2000 by the acquisition of a leading player on
the sun protection market: Helioblock."

So they bought up the company and the name and maybe slapped the name
on the Anthelios because it's more familiar to people in South
America. It's really difficult to tell if the Helioblcok XL is the
same because the tube is so small and I can't read the fine print.

I found a whole bunch of Helioblock links that mention "SX" and "W" .
. .but perhaps the XL is newer. Hard to know.

The tube I have from France says "Ultra Protection UVA and then has the stats
IPD 80 / PPD 28 underneath that writing -- right on the orange stripe.
I belive the SX and others don't have those figures. And the tube
says "sunblock."

I hope you can get thru to the L'Oreal rep in Santiago and even if
they won't sell me anything, I'd think they'd at least be able to tell
you whether Anthelios 60+ XL and Helioblock 60+ XL are identical . .
(I don't want similar, I want "same as"--or better!)... and maybe they
can steer you/me to a source for the 100 ml, should it exist in town.
Maybe one has to go to a department store -- to a L'Oreal counter?

Request for Question Clarification by bobbie7-ga on 13 Aug 2005 15:11 PDT
The Helioblock Anthelios Cream XL 60+ cream has the same stats as yours.

Índice UVA (IPD) = 80, Índice UVA (PPD) = 28.

Take a look here:
It's in Portuguese from a site in Brazil.
http://www.compresaude.com.br/loja/detalhes.php?pCod_produto=1469

After reading your information and reading the above, I believe they
are the same cream.

I'll try to get through to Loreal on Tuesday to confirm that.

In any case every SalcoBrand store has 2 or 3 of those creams in stock.

I think you're right. This looks like the same thing. The ingredient
list on my box is in a different order, but it seems to be all the
same things, so I'm going to assume this is the real deal.
I guess they're doing the label thing to appeal to the area they're
in: like they call it Dreyer's ice cream West of the Mississippi and
Breyer's East of the Missippi.

But unfortunately, these are still only the 50 ml size, which means
it's really for the face (you can use it on the body, too, but you can
imagine how quickly you'd go thru those small tubes.) Still, if the
price is right, I'll stock up.

Will the prices be the same at every pharmacy? You quoted about
$21.00 -- which is cheaper than here -- but I was really hoping for a
bargain. But since it's an import, maybe that's unrealistic.

Here are the prices from the three leading drugstore chains in Chile.

Salcobrand: 11,285 pesos
Farmacias Ahumada: 13,290 pesos
Cruz Verde: 11,900 pesos

None of them know about a 100 ml size.

Drugstores here are open on Saturdays and some of them are open on Sunday as well.

Hi Cryptica,

I just got off the phone with María de Los Angeles of La Roche-Posay products.

She confirmed that Helioblock Anthelios XL 60+ is exactly the same as
Anthelios XL 60+ . She also said that this product is not available
in the 100 ml size.

Unfortunately they can?t sell these products directly individuals. You
would have to purchase them from a retail drugstore.

She gave me a contact at Cruz Verde Drugstore located in Providencia.
(Roxana Soto - pharmacist)

I called and Roxana said that she would order 40 tubes of this cream
for you and have them available on Saturday, September 3rd .

Since I mentioned that these creams are cheaper at Salcobrand, she
said that she will sell them to you at the same price as Salco. They
will cost 11,285 pesos each.

Here?s the address:

Farmacias Cruz Verde
2208 Providencia Street,(corner Lyon)
Phone: 3355621

This Farmacia Cruz Verde is open every day.

Saturday: 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM
Sunday: 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM
Monday: 8:30 AM to 10:00 PM

All you have to do is go in and ask for the 40 creams. They?ll be on
her desk. If they ask for a name, just say that Alicia sent you.
Alicia is pronounced Ah-lee-see-ah.

If you decide that you don?t want to purchase the 40 tubes of cream,
please let me know as soon as possible so that I can cancel the order.

Cryptica, I hope you have a great time in Chile!

Best regards,
Bobbie7

If you don't want 40 tubes, please let me know the exact quantity you
need and I´ll call the drug store and tell them. ( I asked for 40
because I didn't know exactly how many you wanted.)

You are GOOD! I'll close down the answer really soon, but it's
easier to communicate with you
with the clarification for a bit.

I put in calls to the people who told me they want the
Anthelios/Helioblock to find out how many tubes they want and I will
give you an answer by tomorrow morning if the total is going to be
more or less than 40. I'll give you an answer regardless! I would
also be happy to call
Roxana from here and give her my credit card for a deposit, if you
think that would be a good idea.

Our group will be staying at the NH Hotel, Avenida Condell, 40,
Santiago, 1000. It's 2 blocks from the El Salvador subway stop. Is
that anywhere near the pharmacy? No problem if it isn't, but I'm
curious.

Stay tuned for the sunblock tally. . . and if you're around on that
weekend and you'd like
to meet (yes, I know it violates GA policy, but what's to stop you
from bopping into a pharmacy on a Saturday and staring at a woman with
40 tubes of Helioblock in her arms?) -- I'd be honored.

Clarification of Answer by bobbie7-ga on 16 Aug 2005 17:22 PDT
As soon as you let me know the exact number of creams you'll need I'll
reconfirm your order.

Or perhaps you could speak to Roxana yourself as it's getting a bit
unconfortable for me because I can´t give her your name or anything.

It's up to you if to decide if you want to give your crdit card for a deposit.
She didn't ask me for a deposit.

This drugstore is 3 subway stops from the El Salvador subway stop.
If you go by subway you'd have to get off at Los Leones.

I studied Spanish for 4 years in high school, but my vocabulary is

Of course, if she doesn't habla ingles, you could tell me how to say
the stuff in espanol (I can read and pronounce) and I'll recite it to

OK, looks like so far, with not all votes in, I can use 25. But I'm
worried about taking any more than that now because people here are
warning me that if my luggage gets a random (or not random) check at
customs, carrying too much much product thru is going to get me in
trouble -- even though it is for my own personal use and my friend's
and not for sale. I'm thinking 40 tubes is probably pushing it. If
you need to respond to Roxana today, tell her 25. Otherwise, I will

Victory! I just got off the phone with Roxana and it was great fun.
My first words were, "Habla Usted ingles?" and she said no, but
immediately threw out the name "Alicia," so she clearly knew who I
was.
I told her I wanted 25 tubos and she was fine and we agreed I would
come to the pharmacy in the "tarde" on Saturday. I told her I am
coming from Portillo and said, "si hay el nieve," and ran out of
words. Meaning, I was trying to say if there's snow, I might be
late... .it took a while but I think she got it. Then I offered to
give her my credit card number, but what's the word for Credit Card?
She didn't understand "master card" or "Credit Card," so I finally
said, "Quiero llegar el dinero." But doesn't that mean I want to
leave with the money? Then I tried el dinero por telefono! Which I
thought was a smooth move. She said no -- something about the
"machina." I gather they can't do it over the phone, they need the
"tarjeta" in the machina in person.
And that about wrapped it up. It was fun! Thank you again for all
your help. I definitely will give you a full report, too, as I will
have my lapatop with me down there!

Hi Cryptica,

What an adventure you had with Roxana!!

Credit Card is "Tarjeta de Credito"

"Quiero llegar el dinero" means I want to arrive the money.
I think Roxana understood that you'd be bringing the money.

Should you need anything else just post a clarification and I´ll do
the best I can to help.

Have a great trip!

You know what I just realized? In all the back and forth on the phone
with Roxana, she never asked me my name and I didn't remember to give
it to her! The coin of our realm: "Alicia."

Maybe she thinks your name is Alicia also. :)

By the way, my name isn't Alicia. It's just a name I always use when I
want to be anonymous.

Bobbi / "Alicia" --

Rock around the Helioblock! Thought you'd want to hear how everything
worked out. Just got back from Chile and Roxana was a sweetie. I
actually went to pick up the tubes almost a week early, as we were
stranded in Santiago for 3 1/2 days and couldn't get to Portillo
because the road was closed. (They got 110 inches of snow in 4 days).
That Cruz Verde branch was the tiniest little storefront, but Roxana
was ready for me and I got 25 tubes and then bought some of the
Lechuga handcream, which upon looking at it, seemed not that clever,
but she and her assistant were so nice and I was having fun with my
limited Spanish that it seemed a shame to quit with just the
Anthelios. I tried to convey that I liked funny, silly stuff -- or
unique to Chile items, but they kept misunderstanding and trying to
sell me Chanel and high end products. I asked for a few of the
inexpensive bottles of the Rosa Mosqueta oil, which I read was a
Chilean exclusive and then they got all excited and insisted I must
purchase Rosa Mosqueta Night Cream and suddenly I could see things
financially getting out of hand, so I clutched my chest and cried,
"Corazon!" And we all laughed and I handed over my credit card and
haven't dared to look at the receipt since.

I want to thank you again for your help. It was a genuine little
adventure. (And once the road to Portillo opened -- the normally 2
1/2-hour drive took 10 hours! - - that, too, was fabulous and it was
magnificent skiing. And, I ended up selling 8 of the tubes to my
fellow skiers (at cost), who now all swear by the stuff. So
consider that you and I have done our small part for skin cancer
prevention.
Thank you again.

Hi Cryptica!

I was thinking about you last week because of the heavy rainstorms we
had. I?m glad you were finally able to get to Portillo; even though
it took 10 hours.

I?m delighted that everything went well with Roxana and that you got
your Helioblock creams. They say that Rosa Mosqueta oil is good for
scars, so that was a good buy also.

Thank you for taking the time to let me know how everything turned out.

Regards,
Bobbie7
