Hi I'm planning a motorcycle trip through Mongolia soon and will be taking a GPS unit with me. I've done this trip before in the country and had a GPS unit but no good map of the country or list of reference points so this time I'd like to find a good list/source of mapped GPS points (i.e. cities, etc) in the country with which I can use to navigate. I have heard that the microsoft AutoRoute program is pretty good but would require a lap top--which I don't plan on carrying. I have also heard that the Garmin MapSource World Map program for the Garmin GPS unit is ok but is probably too high level. I'm looking for any sources of either amature plotted GPS points or proffessional produced detailed points which I can enter into a GPS unit. |

HI, Have you tried Google Earth? It has an overlaying map function and shows geo-coordinates as you move your cursor. And it is a fun site. :) |

A very useful resource is the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Nmaes Online which can be found at: http://www.getty.edu/research/conducting_research/vocabularies/tgn/index.html If you simply type 'Mongolia' into the Nation field, it will give you a list of all the various cities, towns, lakes & mountains in Mongolia together with their co-ordinates. Of course, you would need to refer to a separate map of Mongolia to decide which places you wanted to input co-ordinates for... |

Flight Charts are about the largest scale maps that I know of for remote parts of the world, on sheets approx 50 in. x 42 in. This site sells them at half of what I have seen elsewhere. http://www.aerotraining.com/cgi-bin/vcateg Click on world wide and then scroll down to Mongolia (ONC F-8) and click, then again on "more detail" in the text. You will find that all of Mongolia is actually on five charts. The good thing is that the full degrees of Lat. and Long. extend the length and width of the topographical chart with minutes marked along each line. I am not sure of the scale. My ONC G-7 chart, that you can find on the detail overview, is 1:1,000,000, so it would seem that the charts for Mongolia include a greater area on the same sized sheet. I hope this helps, Myoarin |

chinggiskhan-ga , Sorry about that link. Here is the home page: http://www.aerotraining.com Click on the Google hit, then click on "product catalogs" (the upper left circle), then click on "charts, maps and airports", and then follow the instructions above. Here is an example of a VFR chart. ON this one, the Lat. and Long. lines with miinute hashmarks are about the least apparent information. ON charts for Mongolia, they will be much more dominant. http://aero.nrcan.gc.ca/jpeg/vnc.jpg Google will tell you it can't find the site, but click on the first underlined repetition and it will bring you straight to the chart (I hope, it did for me.) I hope you are delighted. Myoarin |
