I would like a source (or sources) which would show me Private Eye covers
 AND (and listen carefully!) would explain the context (usually political) 
of the contents (of the cover). (The further back the sources go the better)

Hmm, tutuzdad's source looks familiar.  ;-)  Because a single comment
is hiding at the bottom of the page, it's easy to overlook -- I've
done so a couple of times recently.

In any event, I'll join in with tutuzdad and ask whether this resource
is sufficient.

It's a close call as to whether tutuzdad or I should reply.  Since I
posted the information initially, I suppose I should reply.  But I
will happily buy tutuzdad that drink, or better still, defer in
another situation where both of us have a contribution to the answer.

Yes please use this as an official answer. ( I am sure you can sort
out which of you will officially answer. Whoever answers can buy the
other a drink at
the next GAR's convention!!)

I can see that this site is as good as I am going to get with this one.
Ideally I would liked to have seen some of the background context but
considering that there are now over a 1000 issues some considerable
work was put into putting this site together.
Perhaps if the author of the site sees this question he/she might
spend another 10 years to investigate and write the story behind each
cover!
(I do notice that the author has not always been able to identify all
the people on the cover!)
