I am looking for a quotation on value selling. The one that I saw some
time ago was about 3 or 4 sentances long and talked about how those
who buy for the cheapest price get what they pay for. It was credited
to someone fairly famous - like a Benjamin Franklin....

Hello:
  Could be this?

Beware of small expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.
- Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Regards.

The quotation that I am looking for filled an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet with
fairly large font. It was about 3-4 sentances long.

Thank you

Dear trichardson,

This essay "Way to Wealth" by Franklin has some passages referring to
cheapness but they generally urge not to buy, rather than to buy
something more expensive, so I was unsure that this is what you were
seeking.

""Here you are all got together at this vendue of fineries and
knicknacks. You call them goods, but if you do not take care, they
will prove evils to some of you.You expect they will be sold cheap,
and perhaps they may for less than they cost; but if you have no
occasion for them, they must be dear to you. Remember what Poor
Richard says, buy what thou hast no need of, and ere long thou shalt
sell thy necessaries. And again, at a great pennyworth pause a while:
he means, that perhaps the cheapness is apparent only, and not real;
or the bargain, by straitning thee in thy business, may do thee more
harm than good. For in another place he says, many have been ruined by
buying good pennyworths."

Dear trichardson,

Do any of these Price Quotations from Future Health sound appropriate?
http://www.futurehealth.org/qprice.htm

I understand that these are not sufficiently long and intend to source
the full quotation, however I thought identifying the correct author
may expedite the process.

Dear trichardson,

Glad we were able to identify the quote. Unfortunately it seems
difficult to locate any more of the quotation (as I had originally
planned following author identification). It seems considerable doubt
exists as to whether Ruskin is the source:

I don't know either, trichardson-ga, but here's a few to amuse you

The quote: "There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot
make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who
consider price only are this man's lawful prey." by John Ruskin
supplied by ozguru-ga was the one I was looking for. Now, I just have
to figure out how to indicate that on this system. Thanks!
