How can I instal an old dot matrix printer - a Star Gemini-10X - on either of two unlinked PCs running on Microsoft Windows XP Professional? The printer is not shown in the list given in Windows XP's printer set-up wizard. I have downloaded some drivers for the Gemini-10X from the Web, but these, at first glance, appear not to be Windows-approved. While one of the PCs, my own, is Internet-ready, the real point of the question is to enable me to instal the printer on the other PC (that of a relative), about 5 miles away, which does not have a modem. |

You can install the printer on LPT1 using the "Generic" printer driver which comes standard with all windows. But the Generic driver wont support advanced graphics but will be just fine for printing text. I would recomend trying the drivers you have even though they are not reported as compatible. You will probably find they will work, just that Microsoft wont support them. The worst that will happen is the drivers will send pages and pages of gibberish to your printer. |

It looks like you can get printer manuals from http://www.star-micronics.co.jp/eng/dl/dl01_02.htm If you check the manual you will probably find that, with a combination of DIP switch settings on the printer, the Star will emulate an Epson printer which is more likely to be supported by Windows (possibly as a generic Epson model). This will give you betters uypport of fonts etc than the plain text generic driver. Owain |
