When I was in 3rd grade (1955 or so)I loved a book my teacher let me
borrow. The book seemed old when I read it then. It was about the life
of a brother and sister in Holland who would skate on the frozen river
near their home. It was not "The Silver Skates". Seems to me it was
much lesser known than that. Can't remember the title. Any ideas? |

Hi holdman,
Could it be "The Dutch Twins", Kit and Kat?

Although this is a good try, this is not the story I remember. The
story was about a brother and sister in Holland, but this book is too
simple and aimed at a younger reader than I recall. I remember a scene
where the entire village was out on the canal skating and how the kids
visited one another by way of the frozen canal. Sorry, not much more
that I recall, except that it seemed to be a thick book for a
children's book.

No, definitely not about German occupation. It was a very homey and
sweet story aimed at grade school children. I was about 8 and a good
reader for my age.

How about "Ned and Nan in Holland"?
http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?y=0&tn=ned+and+nan+in+holland&x=0
Details are hard to come by, but needless to say, the title suggests
that it's about a boy and girl in Holland. Also, the length (128
pages) is consistent with the thickness you remember. Additionally,
the various edition years (1916 and 1944) are consistent with your
recollection of it being an "old" book when you read it.
Also, in 1921, the Madison Public Library apparently described the
book as suitable for 2nd graders.

As such, this would also be consistent with your recollection of the
book being a "sweet story aimed at grade school children."
What do you think?

Regarding Ned and Nan in Holland: without more info, I really can't
say if this is the book, but the title is not at all familiar. I don't
think this is it.
