Question ID: 556205
I'm going to be traveling this week and would love to be able to catch
up on my blogs on Bloglines. I'll be offline and am wondering what a
good way would be to read what's in Bloglines without having to be
connected to the Net. Is there another RSS reader that I could dump
my postings into. I'm not quite sure how all this works and would
love some help!

Hi,
Sadly enough - if you are not connected to the internet you cannot
read new content that has changed or been updated since you logged on
your last time.

This isn't true only for blogs, but also for email & website content etc etc.
Downloading large amounts of content CURRENTLY available on the
internet to your computer for later offline reading is simple, but
that's not want you need here.

If you would like to elaborate on where you are travelling and what
type of accomodation you will be using - it's possible to outline your
options for using various methods and services to get online and catch
up on your Blogs.

Are you taking a laptop? Will you be in offices? Will you have access
to a computer at a hotel? Do you have any wireless mobile device that
can connect to the internet?

To get really lo-tech - someone back home can print out the latest
blog updates and fax them to you.

Take care

I'm sorry. I should have been more clear here. I will have my laptop
with me. I just won't have a Net connection. So what I'm wondering
is whether there is a way to set it up so that all of the blog posts
that I currently see when I'm in Bloglines (approx. 100 new and saved
posts) can be available to me offline so I can read them on the plane,
etc.

Hi,
Have you tried the Clippings option or is that too much work for the
amount of posts you want to save?

Hi,
It is possible in Bloglines to go to the 'edit' option and at the
bottom left of the screen click on 'Export Subscriptions'.
You can save the ouput as an xml file and should be able to import it
to a software rss reader. Dose this sound OK to ?

Thanks landog. I think that the clip this would probably be more work
than its worth. The export feature sounds interesting though. Can
you suggest an RSS reader that might work well with this function?

Hi,
First of all It seems that the Exported Subscriptions OPML file from
Bloglines has some bugs/issues and all of the 4 (four) different RSS
readers I tried to import it to - choked on it and failed.

But after editing the exported file a little I have succeeded in
getting it to import OK.

These are the steps you will need to export your Bloglines
subscriptions and import them to an the BlogExpress rss reader that
you will be able to use offline.

1. Download and install BlogExpress
http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlblogexpress.html

2. Export your subscription in Bloglines. In the left pane in the 'My
Feeds' tab choose 'Edit' then select all the feeds with the top
checkbox.
Scroll down to bottom of click on 'Export Subscriptions' and you will
have a new web page with OPML code pop up.

3. Right click on the code and choose 'select all'. Right click again
and choose 'Copy'.

4. Open up Notepad: Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Notepad.

5. Right click in the Notepad window and choose 'paste'.

6. You will now see the following lines at the top of the file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
- <opml version="1.0">
- <head>
  <title>Bloglines Subscriptions</title>
  <dateCreated>Wed, 17 Aug 2005 06:37:27 GMT</dateCreated>
  <ownerName />
  </head>
- <body>
- <outline title="Subscriptions">

I want you to delete the first line and remove the 4 '-' signs so they
look like this in the end (don't worry about the rest of the lines
below):

<opml version="1.0">
 <head>
  <title>Bloglines Subscriptions</title>
  <dateCreated>Wed, 17 Aug 2005 06:01:55 GMT</dateCreated>
  <ownerName />
  </head>
 <body>
 <outline title="Subscriptions">

7. Save the file: File --> Save As --> Save as type 'All Files'. Name
the file EXPORT.OPML and save it to your desktop.

8. Open up the BlogExpress and go to File--> Import/Merge From OPML,
Browse to your saved EXPORT.OPML and import it. Perform a
synchronization and make sure all your blogs are updated.

9. Shutdown the BlogExpress software and go offline. Reopen the
BlogExpress and verify all your blogs are still there.

Since I cannot accurately predict if your exported OPML file from
BlogLines does not contain other bugs. I will only post this as an
answer if it works for you.

But please feel free to copy here the OPML code from steps 4,5,6 and I
will try to edit it to make it work.

Let me know if I can be of more help.

Things seems to work fine until I get down to Step #8. When I try to
import the OPML file I get the following error message:

Cannot phrase <file path>. This is an unexpected token. The expected
token is 'NAME'. Line 10, position 71.

Any ideas?

Hi,
Can you copy to here the complete OPML code from steps 4,5,6 ?
I will try to edit it to make it work.

Perseverance!

In the end I just decided to open up Bloglines and cut and paste all
of the content into a Word doc. That did the trick well enough.
Landog, I'd still love to reward you for your help with this so if you
would like to post your advice as an answer I would gladly accept it.

Thanks!
