Question ID: 556520
I have an older digital camera. It is a DSC Pro by Xilink and I don't
have a driver that will work with the camera. I dwonloaded a driver
from the internet, but it didn't work. How can I get the digital
pictures from the camera to my computer?

Howdy waltonpc-ga,

It might help researchers to know the operating system (Windows XP, Mac, etc.)
you have on your computer. Thanks!

Ah Yes. A minor detail :)

I am using Windows XP Professional. When I try to install the driver
that I downloaded from the net, I get a message that says that
MicroSoft "strongly recommends" that I do NOT install this driver
software.

Howdy waltonpc-ga,

Appreciate the update and your patience with this diagnostic process.

Did you go ahead and install the driver anyway? Thanks!

Hey denco-ga,

I have plenty of patience. No, I did not install the driver. When
MicroSoft tells me NOT to do something, I obey. So my status at this
time is that I have nothing installed that recognizes the camera.
Could there be something generic that recognizes any and all cameras?
Thanks for your concern on this.

Howdy waltonpc-ga,

I want you to try the following and see where it gets you, please.

If you have already done the following, or its equivalent with the
same file referenced, please try doing your original installation
again, and let it proceed past the point that it warns you. More
on the warning below.

Go to this DriverGuide.com web page.
http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=129077

Click on the "download this file" button on the lower/mid right
hand side.

Select the "Download this file by logging in with your existing
account" menu slection, then click on the "Continue" button.

Use the following for the "Login:" box: drivers
Use the following for the "Password:" box: all

The above are the "generic" login and password for this site.

Click on the "If you don't want to create your new account, click
here" option.

The next page requires you to type a three letter verification,
which you should type in, and then you should select "Your hard
drive" for the "Download Destination" and click the button.

If you have the Internet Explorer (IE) blocker, or another blocker
installed, you might get a warning. In the case of the IE blocker,
click on the yellow bar across the top, the click on "Download File"
to continue. This is a 1.45M file, so it might take some time to
download if you have a slow connection.

Go to where you saved the file, then double click on it to "unzip"
the file. There will be a installation guide text file that is
part of the package named "dscwinxpinstall.txt" that you should read.

Do as it instructs please.

Yes, you will see the same warning you saw before, and you should
tell the process to continue. Only companies that pay Microsoft
a fee, and go through the testing, and any changes needed to pass
the testing, will pass the "Logo" process. Lots of companies do
not chose to go through this process, and companies like Xirlink,
which appears to be "never more," either didn't choose to or were
not around long enough to do so.

Bottom line is that your machine will not blow up if you install
the above referenced driver. Drivers, by the way, are specific to
the device, and for cameras, there are no generic drivers, at least
that I know about. The driver above appears to be best one around
for your camera.

Please try the above, and report back here on the success or failure.

Thanks!

Hey denco,

Great!! I did what you said and now IT WORKS. Thanks a lot.

Actually, I had already done exactly what you said, but I stopped at
the warning. With your explaination of the warning, I took the bold
leap and "Continued Anyway", and everything worked.

So now I have one more question. I'm very satisfied with your answer.
How do I close out this question?

Thanks a lot.

Howdy waltonpc-ga,

This answer of the question will "close" the question, and will
allow you to rate, etc. the answer if you so desire. Glad that
it all worked out for you.

Here is what appears to be the best way to get a Xirlink DSC-Pro
digital camera to work on a computer running Microsoft Windows XP
Professional.

Go to this DriverGuide.com web page.
http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=129077

Click on the "download this file" button on the lower/mid right
hand side.

Is the company name Xilink or Xilinx? More importantly is this a
serial or usb camera? What is the media it uses to record? Thanks,

Jim

The company name is actually Xirlink, and the DSC-Pro can be connected
via a serial or USB port. It has 2MB of built-in memory.
