Dear pwayner-ga,

After Turner?s death his estate was settled and the art works found in
his studio were granted to the British nation. This became known as
the ?Turner?s Bequest?. The collection numbers almost 300 oil
paintings and approximately 30,000 sketches and watercolours.

The bequest is now at the Tate Gallery in London. The Tate is liasing
with other art collections throughout the world to compile a worldwide
catalogue of Turner?s works.

The worldwide catalogue is available on-line and I shall now direct
you to the site so that you can search for the subject of Norham
Castle. I cannot post the list here as it is subject to copyright.

Go to
http://www.tate.org.uk/servlet/BrowseGroup?cgroupid=999999998

On the right click > Search the Collection
Select the tab > Advanced Search
On the radio button on the right click > Turner
This will then allow you to click radio button > All Turners

By using the Subject Box you can search for the subject of Castle and
you will then be presented with a long list of castles which he
painted - 5386 altogether! Norham Castle appears 27 times. However, to
include all including those in his style, go back to where you have
clicked > All Turners, and just type in Work Title > Norham.

A list of the works then appear - 37 - some with images. Click on the
image to obtain full details of the work, title, date, medium. and
where it is held.

I consider that this is best list available. I am sure the gallery
have made ever effort to track down Turner?s works and I know from my
own knowledge as regular visitor to the galleries in London that the
Tate?s collection is the most comprehensive.

As a test I went to other galleries which have Turner?s Norham Castle
subjects: The Royal Academy and the Cecil Higgins Gallery. I checked
their lists against the Tate?s. All their works appear in the Tate?s
list.

This is wonderfully detailed and very useful. Can you estimate the
completeness of the Tate catalog? Obviously, you checked with two
gallaries, but is it possible to know anything about the works in
private hands?

Dear pwayner-ga,
It is my view that this is the best catalogue available and as their
site indicates, they are making every effort to trace all of Turner's
works, including those in private hands. You may find the following
comments to be of interest from their web site if you have not
alreadsy read it.

"The Turner catalogue is designed to be a first stop for information
on Turner's paintings, watercolours and drawings. The standard
catalogues, Andrew Wilton's The Life and Work of J.M.W. Turner (1979)
and Martin Butlin and Evelyn Joll's The Paintings of J.M.W. Turner
(revised 1984), covering the watercolours and oil paintings
respectively, are cited, but many other works are included which were
outside the scope of these books or unknown at that time."
http://www.tate.org.uk/collections/in_tww.htm

"Turner Worldwide is an ongoing project. It includes records for oil
paintings, watercolours and drawings and aims to provide colour images
for as many as possible through partnerships with other institutions
and private collectors. Where no ownership details are currently
listed, the owner is actively being sought. Should you have
information on the ownership of any work in the ?untraced? category,
many of which have not been seen for decades or longer, please contact
us."

Of course there may be others in private hands which have been hidden
for years but I do not think that they would be an unknown or as yet
undiscovered view of Norham Castle. I hope this helps, but it is only
my opinion.

I should add that on the second link above, if you click on 'List
Untraced Works' you will see an attempt by the gallery to trace
outstanding Turner works. So it seems to me that they are making a
very comprehesive attempt to collate all the works in one catalogue.
