I just bought Visualware Security Suite (iptracer/emailtracker pro). I
do not really understand the purpose of Ip Tracer it seems all it does
give the exact same info as checking whois or dnslookups? Is there a
tool that will trace ip to individual computer?
A good answer will include an iptracing tool that has additional
functions which are not freely available on the web (such as at
www.dnsstuff.com, http://all-nettools.com). |

Hello Elenafox,
I am not quite sure what you mean by tracing to an "individual
computer". For example, the set up I am using at home (and is used by
several people) is something like this:
ISP - Cable Modem - Firewall/Router - computer A, B, C, ...
the IP address sent out is for the firewall/router, not the individual
computers behind the router. The individual computers use private LAN
addresses which do not go to the Internet. The best you can get in
this case is to the firewall / router.
Perhaps you are looking for a service such as "Visual Route"
http://visualroute.visualware.com/
[registration required] which provides a graphical indication of the
IP address (within limits - basically the "closest" router with a
registered geographic position).

I think perhaps I meant tracing ip to the host example
cpe-24-210-239-138.woh.res.rr.com. If there is a tracer that will not
be "tricked" by standard webmail servers/proxys and the like? Once
you have traced the computer name are there additional steps to
getting closer to the identity of the sender?
On www.abika.com I found the following service called "Background
Check of Ip Adress":
"This search scans the public internet and provides you with a list of
possible Names, email addresses, email accounts, website usernames and
Instant Messenger Names that have used a particular IP address in the
last three years."
The above is a paid service ofr only one ip check at a time, wondering
if there is any software that will provide similar function/extensive
ip check/trace or service that will run unlimited traces?
Thank you!

Hello Elenafox,
Your example address is likely a customer of Roadrunner and any
further information on the "identity" of the customer would have to
come from Roadrunner directly. Of course, if you are getting email
from an address like that one, the most likely cause is an infected
computer or "Spam Bot" (and not routed through an open relay or
proxy). You can try to report the spam bot but many have indicated
that the ISPs do not work to stop or clean up their customer's
systems.
I cannot comment on Abika directly but I did find a reference
http://pipeda.blogspot.com/2004_11_01_pipeda_archive.html
(scroll down or search for abika) indicating the company may be
violating privacy laws in one or more jurisdictions - so they may be
prevented from getting you a definitive answer in those areas. I would
also doubt the usefulness of the result in some cases - consider a
dynamic IP assignment (used by many ISPs) - the result would point to
several customers and not necessarily the one sending you spam.
