Dear clueless,

"Way Down in the Hole" was written by Tom Waits. Here you can listen
to an audio clip from the cover version as performed by Clarence
Fountain and The Blind Boys of Alabama:

Here's some documentation:

"The Blind Boys Of Alabama's 'Way Down In The Hole' Is Theme For HBO's
'The Wire' ...The riveting drama series depicts a world where
distinctions between good & evil and crime & punishment are blurred.
The show premiered June 2nd at 10pm."

"The Blind Boys of Alabama's song 'Way Down in the Hole' from their
Grammy award winning album Spirit of the Century is the main title
theme song for HBO’s new series, The Wire, which premiered June 2,
2002."
