Question ID: 557747
My Epson 1520 works excellently on my Mac OS 9.5 and on Win 2000.
Perfect prints at top resolution (for the past several years). It does
not work well on my new HP Laptop (Pavilion with all the whistles). I
am trying to print from the parallel port (LPT1) (As far as I know I
cannot get an adaptor which will enable the 1520 to use the USB ports).
No matter what driver I install, from Epson or from XP the print is
unacceptable at all resolutions. There is a slight difference at each
resolution, but all prints are as bad as the "economy" print setting
under normal circulstances. Epson is NO HELP. They tell me there will
be no updates for the 1520 and suggest I buy a new printer (of course!).
Is there a driver available which will solve this problem? Or ANY way
to solve this problem? I apprecaite help and wonder if any others have
filed similar problems with XP and Epson's older printers. Thanks
very much. BillyK999

According to posts I've seen, the Windows 2000 driver should
work in Windows XP (they are essentially the same operating
system). This page on the Epson site lists the following
driver for the Epson Color 1520 as the latest:

Printer Driver v5.0AE
Windows 2000
SC1520WIN2K50AE.EXE - 2.5MB - posted on 03/27/00

Is that the one you have and used on your W2K system?
Have you tried using that one in XP?

Yes, I have the SC1520WIN2K50AE.exe installed in the XP OS. It does
not work properly. I can print, but the results are unacceptable. I
have also installed the XP driver for 1520 which is imbedded in the XP
OS. It prints the same as the 2K50AE driver. The files printed by both
drivers make it look like my print heads are damaged-uneven, gaps,
faint colors (Black print is acceptable), lines and striations. The
printer test page from the "properties" menu prints the black type all
right, but the Windows color logo is faint, and striated. HOWEVER,
when I connect to my Mac OS 9.5, the 1520 prints perfectly! My WIN 2000
computer is temporarily out of service, but the last time I printed
from it, the printer was working perfectly.

I print in the WIN 2000 from the parallel port. In the Mac OS 9.5 from
the serial port. (I use OS 9.5 because Epson does not support the 1520
in 10X). I really don't want to throw away this fine, rugged,
dependable printer. I now do most of my work in WIN XP and want to use
this printer on my newest hardware/OS combination.

I appreciate your thoughts.

Given what you've told me, I may not be able to offer
any hope. You did specifically clarify that the driver
I named is the one you have installed in the XP system,
but you didn't specify that this is the same driver
you used in your now out-of-service W2K installation.

If you're able to access the W2K system at all, or if
you already know that the driver you used on that system
is the same as the one I cited, we may be out of road
here, but if, by chance, the driver you have installed
on the W2K system is a different one than the one I
mentioned, *that* one may work on XP, even if the newest
one doesn't.

My guess is that you've already tried that driver, but
I'd be negligent if I didn't mention the possibility.

I am not certtain regarding the W2K system. I will have to check with
my son who sets up my Win computers. I'll post the answer later today.
I do appreciate your interest.....billyk

Regarding my older PC, my son informed me that its OS is Home XP
(first bundle or pack) and used the Epson driver SC1520WIN2K50AE.EXE -
2.5MB. (I thought the OS was W2K, my mistake).

However, he says that my new HP Laptop has Home XP-second bundle or
pack- and that this may be why my 1520 does not print well on the HP
Pavilion.

Regarding XP. The term is "service pack" Apparently there are at least
2 packs. My older computer has Office XP, service pack 1: my 1520
prints perfectly from it. My new computer has Home XP, service pack 2:
the 1520 does not print correctly from it.

It sounds like removing Service Pack 2 may be your best option.
There have been many posts by many people on the internet noting
that problems arose after installing XP SP2, and Microsoft has
kindly provided instructions for multiple ways to remove it.
Not all of them are easy, but they are carefully detailed in
this article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=875350

The methods listed include the following:

Use the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel
Use the hidden $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder
Use the System Restore process
Use Recovery Console

The first would be the easiest, and the last can be more
difficult. Here's an additional article about the Recovery
Console:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307654

If one of these solutions works for you, and you consider
the question resolved, let me know.

Sorry about the delay. Not able to remove service pack 2 from the XP
edition installed by HP on my laptop. In order to experiment--remove
SP2, etc. I need to wipe my HD and start over. Not willing to do that
at this point. I am in proces of creating the same system environment
on another cpu in order to ascertain IF this will, indeed solve the
problem.

thanks
