Question ID: 558145
I have a Gateway Millenium Laptop. The only website I have been able to send
to the desktop in the past 6 months is partypoker.com. Here are the
symptoms when I try. I go to address line and type in yahoo.com or
google.com or bellsouth.com. I then go to "file" and "send" and then
"shortcut to desktop" or I sometimes just right click on the page and
send it to the deskptop. Same results

a dropdown menu comes up and in the left hand corner is
"file download"

then... "some files can harm your computer. If the file info below
looks suspicious or you do not fully trust the source, do not open or
save the file."

then

"file" and whatever website i try to bring to the desktop such as
Yahoo or google or bellsouth......that lines says the websites name
and ".url"

then
"file type: internet shortcut"

then

"from: c\windows\desktop"

then "this type of file could harm your computer if it contains
malicious code. Would you like to open the file or save it to your
computer?"

Then 4 boxes to choose from......box one "open"... click that it and
goes back to the same screen.

box two "save".... screen disappears

box three "cancel" screen disappears

box four "more info" screen comes up about downloading files but I
don't see where any of this pertains to why I can't send anything to
the desktop. I have my security zone set on medium....Any suggestions?
Thank you

Sounds like a malware infection. I'd suggest downloading
Hijack This, running it, and posting a log here, but if
you're unable to complete a download, I don't know that
it would help. Hijack This:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Short of a successful download of Hijack This, I'd suggest
going to Start -> Run, typing msconfig and hitting Enter.
Go to the Startup tab and disable all. Then reboot.

That should get you operational, and then you can download
Hijack This (HJT), run it and post a log here.

You may need to reboot with all the msconfig items re-enabled
in order to get a useful HJT log.

sublime1-ga.... went to the website you described. that website came
up but when i clicked on hijackthis... it went to what i described
that has been happening.... also tried a msconfig, but that seemed to
mess up my computer and had to use system restore to come back onto
the internet. please bear in mind that i can get the websites by
typing it in the address line, but cannot send any websites via right
click or using " file.... send to" to the desktop. thanks for the help
thogh.

You should just be able to drag-and-drop the link to your desktop
directly from your address line.

Also, I don't know if it's related to YOUR problem but I recently
acquired an infection from a Zotob worm that insisted on changing by
homepage to partypoker.com and persistently opened new browsers to the
partypoker.com site (which is how I came to realize I had the
infection in the first place). You might try to disinfect, or at the
very least scan your computer using an online scanner like Panda.

Let me know if this solves your problem.
