Almost four thousand people died as a result of the violence, not only
by terrorists but also in argues between civilians. The IRA, the most
important organisation, killed about 1500 people before the 28. July
2005, when they declared the end of armed combat.

In order for a researcher to successfully answer your request, you
will need to clarify question in 2 important respects:

1- Historical perspective. The Irish Republic gained its independence
from the UK in 1921. However the modern day troubles to which the
above commenter refers (which actually centre around Northern Ireland)
started in 1968 with the first deaths from the troubles happening in
1969.

Are you talking about deaths since 1921 (in any way related to Irish
Political conflict between North and South and also the UK)?

Or are you only interested in deaths as a result of the modern day "troubles"?

Immediately after Irish Independence , there was an civil war in
ireland which claimed hundreds if not thousands of lives. There was
also from 1921 to 1968 intermittent violence from the IRA and
protestant paramilitaries. This aspect of Irish History probably would
have claimed less than a 100 deaths.

2 What is your definition of a "terrorist" ?
One man's terrrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
So which of the following would you consider a "terrorist"

Catholic Paramilatries (Provos, Official ITA, INLA, Real IRA, etc)

 Protestant Paramilatries (UVF,UDA ,UFF etc)

Agents of the British Government (RUC , British Police, British Army, UDR,
B Specials, SAS, other British Secret services)

Agents of the Irish Government (Garda Siochonna, Irish Army, Irish Secret
 services)

Also if you want to include deaths from the Irish Civil War do you
consider both sides terrorists (pro treaty / anti treaty) as
terrorists?
 Or just one side?
Or perhaps as a famous British politician may have phrased it , they
were all just "ordinary decent warriors"?

I read a good bit, but I'm not a scholar and certainly not an expert.
The atrocities of the last few years by people who profess to be
followers of Islam. As an Irish-American I realize that the Catholics
who attacked British people who were not members of the army. I feel I
need to put the activities of my ancestors into the context of my
thoughts and discussions of the evil of what these current people are
doing.

Not to sound like a broken record, I still think you will need to clarify
your original question before any reseacher will attempt to answer it.

I would say your last comment has only further confused the issue. It
is very difficult to even start comparing the issue of Modern day
terrorism as it relates to the Arabic/Islamic nations to the history
of political strife in Ireland.

Your original question asked about the number of deaths (in Ireland)
perpetuated by "terrorists". Again if you can give a reasonable definition
as to who or what a "terrorist" may be , your question may indeed be
answerable.

As a final point I would not worry too much about how bad or good your
ancesters were in comparision to say Osama Bin Laden. That is
something which would be highly subjective and of course really beyond
your control. Frankly I would not loose any sleep over it.

To DPRK007
How about the number people killed in Great Britain by Catholic
paramilitaries since the "Troubles" began.
