My boyfriend and I received a summons each for posting flyers for our
garage sale on a pole on the street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The
violation is written as 145-30, the offense is described as
"unlawfully posting for advertisement." The officer said that it
would be considered a warning, if we appear and have no prior criminal
record. We are to go to the criminal court in Manhattan. We weren't
even aware it was illegal. Seems like a waste of money. Also, a
friend told me that it wasn't a the police's jurisdiction, but fell
under sanitation. Anyway, is there any way to get out of going to the
court? What are the proper steps if we do appear? Do we have to go
on the date on the summons, or can we go on any date?
