trying to find title of a 'choose your own adventure' style of book
from the mid 80s. the name of the series is something like 'choose
your own horror story'. the book i am looking for had the reader
trapped in a shopping mall overnight and experiencing all sorts of
misadventures. anyone know this book and/or series?

I'm going to go out on a limb her and say that your book was probably
"Nightmare Store" (1982) by Hilary Milton.  It was Book #2 in a series
called "Plot Your Own Horror."
