Hi vichar

'Exact' cost is a bit difficult to calculate as there are different
options available depending on what quality you want.

For property rent prices, you can check out the classfieds at
www.iol.co.za (click on classfieds in left-hand column, search all,
kwazulu-natal, property accomodation). For a family of four, I guess
you'd need a 3br/2ba house - a decent house (not the best/not the
worst) would cost around R5,000 in rent / month.

Other expenses is approximate figures and it would also depend on what
exactly you need it for (for example insurance).

Insurance: Vehicle: R400
www.outsurance.co.za
www.mutualandfederal.co.za (try Allsure policy that included HH and
Vehicle and other risks)

Insurance: Household: R400
(same sites as above)

School fees: Private School R30,000 per annum (or R18,000 pa for public school)
School uniforms: R2,500 pa

For security you'd probably want an armed response service (at home)
and who pays for that will depend on your rental contract. Armed
response is around R300 per month.

Food for a family of four, would cost around R4,000 per month.
For online shopping check out Pick-n-Pay's online shopping site at
https://prod.hs.pnp.co.za/pnp/web/main/A3-4-a.jsp
(click on 'Browse without registering' on the right for a feel on prices)

Cleaning help will be around R1,200 per month.

Weekend trips (to the Drakensberg) for a family of four, would cost
around R2,000 per weekend. It would work out cheaper if you shop
around. Check the official Durban site below for other potential
places to visit.

Things you might also want to consider are:

Broadband internet: R500 p/m

www.wirelessza.co.za/

Telecommunication Services (Cellphone/Landlines) R500 p/m
www.telkom.co.za/athome/services/telephoneline/index.html
www.vodacom.co.za
www.mtn.co.za
www.cellc.co.za

Entertainment for a family of four: R500/month
Movies: www.numetro.co.za or www.sterkinekor.co.za
General and everything else:
(search at google.co.za for things to do in durban entertainment)
www.whattodo.co.za/kzn/durban_metro.htm
www.durban-north.co.za/todo.html
www.durban.co.za/goingout/

You'd probably need a car to get around. Deposits start from R10,000
and monthly repayments R1,000 p/m and it of course depends on the car
you buy.
(google.co.za type cars for sale durban)

www.durban.co.za/business/classifieds.asp?classType=motoring
www.ecr.co.za/index.php?option=com_immediaclassifieds&func=showCat&catid=49
If you buy a fancy car, you'd probably need to install satelite
tracking for insurance purposes R300 p/m
www.tracker.co.za

Bills:
Water & Electricity: R1,000 p/m
Rates & Taxes: R500 p/m

If you will be self-employed or if your employer does not cover
mdeical aid, you'll need a medical aid plan as well. For the whole
family around R2,000 p/m.
www.discovery.co.za

The only definitive hidden cost here is 'exorbitant' bank fees. For
one active transactional account (my own) cost around R150 per month.
For three active accounts it could be R500 / month.
www.absa.co.za (click Rates & Fees in upper left corner, then type of
accounts for details)
www.standardbank.co.za (click Fees, Rates & Prices in left-hand bar)

A good overall site on Durban is the official portal:
www.durban.gov.za (with links to schools, electricity, what to do,
etc.)

One thing I forgot to add is fuel costs. If you're going to have a
car, you'd probably ratchet up around 500 p/m for fuel costs (very
economical).

So add one item to the above list:
Petrol (Gas) Low: R500 High: R1,500.
