Question ID: 559888
When I try to connect to some web site I am getting this error message
below instead of the web site in Internet Explorer. I think it's
something to do with Windows configuartion.
How do I fix it?

"The page cannot be displayed...HTTP 404 - File not found" or
"The page cannot be displayed...Cannot find server or DNS Error"

These messages normally indicate that the website is not
working. This would be fairly easy to verify if you post
the addresses of the websites you're having trouble with.

I think the websites I try to connect have changed their server address
but the old address is remain somewhere in my computer.
I fixed these problem before but I don't remenber.
I think I removed a line which indicates these websites from some kind
of Windows system file.

It's not exactly clear how you're going about connecting
to these sites, but if you're simply using a browser bookmark,
as seems likely, and the bookmark has an outdated address in
it, you'll need to search for the site on Google, using your
best description, obtain the new address, and bookmark it.

Let me know...

Hi harlidxb

It' not firewall or spy ware consuming my bandwidth.
Everything is working fine.
"1" sounds more likely it.
Somebody told me that these website leave their proxy address(I think)
in my Windows registery(my guess) to make quick connection to their
website.
Then that proxy address(my guess) remain in Windows after they change
the proxy address in the DNS.
So that proxy address in my Windows Registery(I'm not sure it's
Windows Registery or some system file) need to be removed.
What is the file name I have to edit to remove the old address of website?
Thank You

I strongly suspect that the file you refer to is the HOSTS
file, which is used to redirect a domain name such as
amazon.com to it's numerical IP address, and can save time
by eliminating the need to look this up via DNS services.
However, if the numerical IP address changes, you will
receive the errors you mentioned.

You didn't say what operating system you're using, but the
HOSTS file is probably located here:
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc

or:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

The HOSTS file has no extension, but if you right-click it
and select 'open with' and then select Notepad, it will
open like the simple text file it is. You can then search
the file for the websites you listed, and remove or modify
the entries.

It may be that the HOSTS file is currently Read Only, so
before you can modify it, you might need to right click
it and select Properties, and uncheck the Read Only box.

Let me know where this takes you, and if you need further
assistance.

The answer depends on many factors,
1. It depends on ISP that customer is connecting too
I mean the proxy address and the DNS servers that is to be configured
in the respective manner. (Those setting to be checked with the
Internet Service provider ISP)
2.It depends on the firewall, which is installed on the computer that
might be blocking the HTTP traffic ?
3. It could be some spy ware software that could be broadcasting data
from your computer that can consume your Internet bandwidth, Please
check your computer with some anti spy ware software (which is
available free in internet).
Go thru these setting it should fix your problem?.
Thanks
