Hi,

I need a list of every city and town in the United States.

It needs to be in this format:

Atlanta
Miami
Jacksonville
Roberta

...and so forth.

Note the list above is *just* cities ...with no states attached and no other text.

I also need a separate list which includes the states like this:

Atlanta Georgia
Jacksonville Florida
Warner Robins Georgia

...and so forth.

Note that there are no commas.

I'll give you a $25 tip if you'll sort this into lists based on population:

All over 1 million
All between 750K and 1 million
All between 500K and 749K
All between 250K and 749K
All under 250K

I need 2 lists for each category.  One with just the city/town name
...and one with  city and state.

Dear Funweb,

Thank you for your clarification.

Please understand that I cannot sort the city and towns by population,
as I do not have the Excel program in my home.  I had to go out and
use another computer to work on this project and I really I don?t know
when I can use their computer again.  I would also have to repeat all
the work I did previously because none of the Excel files were saved.
I only saved the two lists in the format you requested in a text file.

I would suggest that you post a new question asking for the lists of
cities and towns based on the population ranges referred to in your
clarification.

In order to create the data set in my answer, I downloaded the US
Concise file from USGS, and imported it into an Excel spreadsheet.

US_concise.zip compressed file: 1.1 MB

I then sorted the file based on the type of location column
that includes the description "ppl". This  stands for "populated
places" and specifies polulated cities and towns.  I then eliminated
all the non ppl designations.

I also had to enter the full name of each State (only abbreviations were provided).

Lastly I copied the data to a word document and then saved it as a text document.
