My Outlook Express app.(I.E.6)opens and loads very slowly(1 min. or
more)Is this common for O.E?(I usually don't have tons of email it's
trying to recieve)
and is their a way to configure it so it's not so slow to open?

Hi bigjim...

How much mail do you have in your folders?

I have literally thousands, and it takes it
a while to open. I wouldn't say a minute or
more, but nearly 40-60s

So, my question for you is... when was the
last time you compacted your folders?

File/Folder/Compact all Folders

This is in response to the request for clarification from
alienintelligence-ga;

A.I;I dont really have that much in my folders(less than 1 meg)I'm
afraid O.E's gotten corrupted somehow.Unfortunately,as you are
probably aware, both I.E. 6 and O.E. are incorporated in the
XP-OS.According to MS their is no way to uninstall them. The official
MS fix involves a 3 line reg. edit(yahoo) then reinstalling I.E.6 and
get this, all of the XP updates!Talk about a horse designed by
commitee.
Let me know if you know a better way.Meanwhile think I'll start
shopping for a better email client. Later,Big Jim

Hi again bigjim...

Was there anything you installed relatively
around the time OE stopped working properly?

Microsoft might want you to think you can't
uninstall OE, but there isn't a whole lot
they can do to stop you from right clicking
on the folder c:\program files\Outlook Express
and selecting delete. Typically your mail
messages are stored in a different location,
but for safety, I'd go in OE to File/Export/
and export your current messages, and addresses.
After that I'd wipe out any physical trace of
OE, and just reinstall it from the last install
place. I presume your XP cd? Don't wipe it unless
you have something to reinstall it with ;-)
I don't want you to be muttering my name under
your breath with expletives, hehe

On XP, my email "folders" (actually just files)
are at:
c:\Documents and Settings\~username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{ID string}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

AFTER you have saved all of your messages... I
really think you ought to consider just erasing
everything (EXCEPT THE MESSAGES THAT YOU SAVED)
I'd start with the messages files first. If there
is a corruption with those, that will be the
simplest fix. When they are gone, if you start
up OE again, it will make new ones. If it opens
really quickly, the old messages files will have
been the culprit. If that doesn't help, nuke the
OE install directory, and reinstall. If that won't
do the trick, than something you installed recently
has overwritten a system file, like a DLL or VXD
and it is not working correctly with your system.
If that's the case, ALOT of trial and error follows,
ALOT...

Hope this helps,

You might have set up a Hotmail account. In my experience the Hotmail
account slows down the program considerably.

bigjim,

Funny you mention that...I've actually been experiencing the same
thing with my version of OE6. I've set it up to open when starting my
system at its always the last thing to open by a considerable margin.
It doesn't even seems like its opening....the system sits idle for
several seconds before loading as well.

Y'all...

I've been using OE for awhile now, and seem to have
noticed that it does take longer as your folders
fill up with mail, since it has to translate all the
folders and messages before it really opens. You can
make it a leetle quicker, perhaps, by disabling the
splash screen:

You can also do a cleanup, to compact your storage
space. Click Tools --> Options --> Maintenance -->
Clean Up Now --> Compact.

That's all I got...

Outlook Express allows a user to access their Hotmail account with the
program. In my experience using Outlook Express, accessing the
Hotmail account via Outlook Express somehow slowed down OE. I don't
think this is the case with you though.
