1) Causes of lack of sleep in this age group >> Anxiety, hunger, teething, overtiredness, growing pains, stress, teething, illness, 2) Effects of lack of sleep in this age group >> Tantrums, crying, restlessness, lack of eating, lack of activity 3) Solutions and help with this problem >> Controlled crying (also known as Ferber method) where you let the child cry for short periods so that they learn to self-settle >> Co-sleeping - sleeping with the parent. More appropriate for younger children >> Swaddling - More appropriate for babies >> White Noise (or Pink Noise) to wind down. >> Pick Up Put Down- As explained in Gina Ford's Contented Little baby Book. Basically, if baby cries pick them up and once they've calmed down put them down again. Repeat until child falls asleep and over a few days they should learn to sleep >> Dummies or Thumb Sucking - to help self-settling >> Offering water rather than milk when they wake - so there is less incentive to drink during the night 4) List of sleep consultants in the UK who specialise in this topic and offer assistance >> Google "Sleep Clinic" . Health Visitors can also refer you to your local sleep clinic |

As you know, this is a very serious problem if the baby is really not sleeping. Even if the baby is sleeping a little, it's still a significant problem that cannot be ignored.. I don't have the answer to your question, but I have four diagnosed sleep disorders, so this is something I'm familiar with. I'd suggest medical intervention immediately, but your username looks like you may be a physician. I'm posting because I answered a question in January 2004 that *might* possibly help. http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=293539 Also, this search string brings up some results for you to begin looking for assistance: UK pediatric sleep specialist ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&q=UK+pediatric+sleep+specialist&btnG=Search You can refine the results further by adding your city. If the city has two words, be sure to put quotation marks around the "city name" --like that. I wish you the best --and the baby too. ~~Cynthia |
