This is doubtless a very simple thing, although it has been a constant
annoyance for months and I can't figure out how to get it to stop.
On my laptop computer, when I press ", the quotation marks don't
appear. No, instead nothing happens. The computer is waiting for me
to maybe press an "o", see, so then it can make an o with those German
umlauts on top. If I instead press an "h," then Windows prints then "
and then the h.
Once by accident (I've no idea how), I managed to turn this feature
off. But then it seemed to start up again when I rebooted. I just
want things back to normal, permanently.
Incidentally, why is only my laptop doing this? Who, for example,
decided that I would have a greater need to type diacritical marks on
my laptop than my desktop?
Anyhow, I'm running Windows XP. How do I get it to stop? |

Howdy gnossie-ga,
If you check the following please.
Go to Start, then Settings, then Control Panel
Select Regional and Language Options
Select the Languages tab, then click on Details
Make sure the Default input language is set to English (United States) ? US
Make sure the Installed services is set to US
If that is the current settings, or if correcting the entries to set them to
the above takes care of the problem, please report that here please. Thanks!

Yeah, I went in there like you said and US English is set as the
default language. So nothing different.
HOWEVER, one major thing I neglected to mention, now that I think I
see where you're going with this:
This laptop, although a Toshiba with Windows XP, was bought in the
Middle East, where I work and travel. So for example it's also got
Arabic characters on the keys and the presumably latent capability of
switching over entirely to Arabic or at least French.
I realize that this shouldn't have a lot to do with it, and that
Toshiba and Bill Gates & Co. should have their acts together enough to
sell a computer to an English-speaking customer in the Middle East
without his having to be haunted by precisely such a problem, and for
the most part the situation is under control.
I should also mention that this is a problem with ALL of Windows on
this thing, not just Word and Excel and stuff. For example, I also
have to deal with this annoying feature when I'm merely renaming
files.

Howdy gnossie-ga,
Greatly appreciate your patience with this diagnostic process.
If you look at the small icons near your time display of your desktop,
do you see an icon that appears to be a small keyboard, or possibly a
blue box with two letters in it, such as "EN" or perhaps another two
letters? Thanks!
