Dear nickayune-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question. Here you go:

>>> When is the first day of school in Fall of 2005 for students of
the Springfield Public Schools ("SPS")?

The 2005 school year for students grade 1-12 and faculty begins
Tuesday, September 6, 2005. If there is an earlier date (presumably
the preceding Monday) during which the staff will meet prior to the
beginning of the school year, it is not public information.

Kindergarten begins Monday September 12, 2005.

Pres-school begins Tuesday September 13, 2005.

>>> What about the first day of school for employees/teachers?

See above

>>> How are the SPS governed?

Springfield Public Schools are governed by the School Committee

>>> is that Committee autonomous or does it report to another division
of the local government?

The School Committee answers to the mayor who serves as committee chairman.

The committee members are elected by the people.

Here?s how it can be summed up in a nutshell:

?The School Committee consists of six members elected to four-year
terms; three members are elected every two years. The mayor is chair
of the School Committee. A vice-chair is elected from among the
remaining six members.

The committee sets school policy, hires, evaluates and may fire the
superintendent and reviews and passes the annual budget and
supplementary budgets. It also approves the curriculum, the discipline
policy, and textbooks, and negotiates and approves contracts for buses
and personnel.

The School Committee meets twice a month on Thursday evenings at 7:30
in Room 220, City Hall. Call the committee office for exact dates.
Before certain committee meetings, public speak-outs are scheduled at
7:00 p.m. To learn the date of the next public speak-out, citizens
should call the committee office and sign up by leaving their names
and stating the topics they wish to address.?

Complete answer; seemed to take a while. One item was "not public
information," but I'm not sure if that necessarily means that it is
not information that cannot be obtained. Could a telephone call have
been made? But I don't know if the researchers are confined to using
the Web to answer questions.
