Why are the copyright notices missing on some old albums? Does that
mean they are in the public domain?

Could you give an example or two of old albums that are missing
copyright notices? There are bound to be numerous albums from various
times or countries that lack copyright notices. But if you can narrow
the question to specific albums, we might be able to address why those
copyright notices are missing.

Please note that since you have priced the question at $5.00, we would
probably be able to research only one or two albums. See

Kind of Blue is an example. Miles Davis' great classic was first
published in 1959 by Columbia Records owned by CBS--now called Legacy
Records owned by Sony. It appears to have no copyright notices
anywhere on the album cover or album. (I have unfortunately not
actually seen the item however)

A&M records is another example when examining Herb Alpert's TJB albums
released during the 60's--I have several of those and they contain no
notices on the cover, slip cover nor vinyl itself.
