It is possible to see the websites that point to a particular server,
though it is not through the WHOIS database...how can you do this?
What function would I need to perform and how?

Other than a zone transfer that they have restricted...I do not wish
to map out the network, only to find the domain names pointing to a
server.

Hello georgiabear-ga

Thank-you for your question.

The functionality you require is located at this location:

http://whois.webhosting.info/

Simply enter the domain name you wish to query into the box and press Go.

This will perform a full whois search on your query and provide you
with further information on the domain. Within this information you
will see an entry called Reverse IP Lookup. This entry gives you the
details on how many websites point to a particular server, simply
click on the number to reveal the website urls.

If you know the IP address of the server you can access the data
directly by using a URL similar to
http://whois.webhosting.info/[YOUR-IP-ADDRESS-HERE]

A similar website is also available at http://www.whois.sc/reverse-ip/
but this site is not free.

I hope this answers your queries, should you require any further
information on this subject please ask for clarification and I will do
my best to respond swiftly.

That is a great website and tool...however, it will not look up a
server by ip address. I looked up one domain "xyz.com" that I know
is going to the main server is says:

"xyz.com"
IP Addresses:	N/A
IP Location:	N/A
Reverse IP Lookup:	N/A

Hosting Company Name:	here it gives a the company name in
name.city.state.us form (Total Domains: 682)
ICANN Registrar:	INTERCOSMOS MEDIA GROUP, INC. D/B/A DIRECTNIC.COM
Creation Date:	Jan 1 2000
Expiry Date:	Jan 1 2006

Web Server:	apache/1.3.12 (unix) mod_perl/1.24 php/4.0.1pl2 mod_layout/0.7
Website Status:	Active

How can I find out the names of the 682 domains that are being hosted
by that company?

If I simply go to http://whois.webhosting.info/111.111.111.1 (the ip
address of the actual primary server dns1) it comes back and says IP
Details - N/A

Thank you!

Did you try it at the whois.sc site? What happened there?

You obviously need to hide the name of the URL you are wishing to
query but if you could give these details it would help enormously in
any additional help I can offer here.

These tools may also be of interest to you:

There is also an interesting thread on this kind of lookup on the
following page, it gives some information as to why not all sites may
be included. It should be noted that parked domains cannot found -
only ones that actually point to the IP address.

Not clear about your question...are you saying how CAN you do this
using WHOIS? Or simply, how can you get that info...anyway, anyhow?

Are you looking for more than just the data that comes from Search
Engine Optimization tools like the ones here:
