XP key combos for Standby and Resume
I use Standby and Resume a lot. Normally I RESUME by just moving the
mouse towards me and the machine awakens. For some strange reason
this method of Resume no longer works. I changed the Logitech
wireless mouse batteries to no avail. While I continue to
troubleshoot, are there key combinations for Standby and for Resume?

e.g. CTRL+ ____
      WinKey + _____
      Alt + ______

Muchos Gracias

Hello grthumongous-ga

Microsoft has a list of keyboard shortcuts here:
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/keyboard/keyboardresults.asp?Product=27

Unfortunately there is not a default "Standby" or "Resume" shortcut
key command, but Standby can be done via a number of keystrokes.

To standby you need to press:
Win key, then U, then S

There is no shortcut key for Resume as this would not make sense... if
your computer is already running why would you need to resume it?!

I have also located a tweak that provides what I believe is similar
functionality to what you require:
http://www.tweakxp.com/article37426.aspx

Similar programs include:
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptstopper.asp
http://msosno01.tripod.com/xp_shortcuts.htm

I use a similar method of switching my PC on from standby except I tap
the keyboard (rather than wiggling the mouse) to resume the PC. These
settings are normally configured in the BIOS of your computer.

Let me know if this is of any use to you or if you need any more help on this.

Hi thanks, I don't have time right *now* to peruse the links but I
should stress that the Resume from Standby (sleep)-mode is not
working as it did.
The mouse no longer wakes it up, leaving me with only the power-on button.
The longer path-length power-on button adds the new step of requiring
me to enter the BIOS password.

What I was looking/hoping for was a way to Resume other than mouse mover.

I do not understand what you mean by "the longer path-length power-on
button adds the new step of requiring me to enter the BIOS password"?
Can you explain this a little further?

When your PC is in standby no software is running on it, this
(usually) only happens when you run an operating system such as
Windows. I believe the settings you will need to alter are in your PC
BIOS. These are usually located in the Power Management section.

I have always RESUMEd by moving the mouse.
That does not work anymore.
Thus the question.
I have not changed anything.
I am wondering of there is some OTHER way to RESUME without me moving the mouse.

There are two answers for this:

One:
While you state nothing has changed on your system obviously something
has somewhere.

Places to check are:
BIOS - Power Settings - Especially the resume by type settings
Control Panel - Power Options - See if the settings there are appropriate.
Also, check very carefully to see what happens when you press the
power button on your PCs box. It may allow you to resume from
hibernation.

Two:
Windows shortcut keys can be allocated via the following method (from
the help file) ... you could use it to make a quick shortcut to power
down your computer by getting it to run a program or batch file.

Open My Computer.
Locate the program file (.exe) or the program's shortcut icon.
Right-click the program file or shortcut, and then click Properties.
Click the Program tab for an MS-DOS program or the Shortcut tab for a
Windows program.
With the cursor in the Shortcut key box, select the keyboard key you
want to use in combination with CTRL+ALT. Shortcut keys automatically
start with CTRL+ALT. The Shortcut key box will display None until you
select the key and then the box will display Ctrl+Alt+the key you
selected. You cannot use the ESC, ENTER, TAB, SPACEBAR, PRINT SCREEN,
SHIFT, or BACKSPACE keys.
 Notes

To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Once you assign a shortcut key combination for a specific program, you
will not be able to use that key combination with other programs. For
a list of shortcut keys used by this version of Windows, click Related
Topics.
If you forget the key combination for your shortcut, you can follow
steps 2 through 3 and review your shortcut keys.
Using shortcut keys to open programs can often be simpler than opening
programs using a pointing device, especially when working on portable
computers.
