Question ID: 562221
I was cleaning out my files on my hard drive and the next day when I
restarted the computer up, I received a message saying NTLDR is
missing. I searched on Google on this matter and was told to insert
the Reinstallation disk of Windows XP, and boot up into System
Recovery Panel. Once I did that, it said to write this in the Panel:
copy d:\1386\ntldr c:\
and
copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
Once I did all this, I exited and restarted the computer, that is
where now instead of saying NTLDR is missing, Press CTRL ALT DEL to
restart it states: NTLDR is compressed, Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart.
Is there anyway to get back into my computer without reinstalling the
Windows XP Operatying System so I don't have to lose all my data?

Try this:

Go into the recovery console again, and type:

attrib -C ntldr
attrib -C ntdetect.com

Reboot... Did it work?

Hi, I tried that and after I typed in attrib -C ntldr
Nothing came up, so I typed in attrib -C ntdetect.com and at the
bottom it says: Command is not recognized.

I think the "attrib -c ntldr" part worked because now it says "NTLDR
is missing" when I try rebooting instead of "NTLDR is compressed"

Anyway to get beyond NTLDR is missing?

Others suggest I type in the command "expand" instead of "copy" for:
copy d:\1386\ntldr c:\

However when I do this, it states: "The file could not be expanded."

The solution is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320397

You need to contact Microsoft Support (it's free) for the tool. I
actually found it online, but, well, let's just say that I don't feel
comfortable giving you a link to something that I can't authenticate.

Microsoft support will walk you through the fix. Did I mention it will be for free?
