I've been a web designer for years, off and on, and I'm in the middle of re-designing my blog at the same time as being asked some design advice for a few close friends. Basically, I'm wondering if some statistics exists that show the most common screen resolution, as I've been designing for 800x600 and 1024x768 for quite a while now, and it seems like it should be time to start designing bigger. | |

Looking at the stats for my own websites would suggest that about 74% are using a resolution of 1024x768, however almost 14% have 800x600. Analyzing your visitor stats should give you an informed answer for your own website. I would suggest that if there is a reasonable percentage still using 800x600 then you must still consider them when designing new pages otherwise you risk losing a hefty portion of your site traffic. Always remember that it can be very irritating if a surfer has to scroll sideways to view the content of a page. Hope this helps! |

Hi, Just to add, newer laptops that have widescreen, and most new flat-panel monitors feature an optimal resolution of 1280x800, although I doubt there will be a wide majority of these users online (I'm one of them!) |
