I have a number of different adware and spyware protections on my computer. I am more or less pleased with these. I never wnat to use McAfee or Norton again, as they really messed up my system. My question is, Is there a way to block a specific website from popping up on my computer? For example, I no longer get pop-ups anymore, with one exception: http://adopt.specificclick.net/ It's the only one that gets through. Is there anyway I can "ban" this website from my browser? | |

Just add an entry to your hosts file: 127.0.0.1 adopt.specificclick.net You can read about this technique here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm |

The previous comment about editing your hosts file is perfect. And for a completely-packaged solution that uses your hosts file to block a whole bunch of advertising sites: http://everythingisnt.com/hosts.html |

Thanks very much for these solutions... The instructions for changing/adding a Hosts file are a bit confusing, so it will take me some time to figure out how to do this... But at least now I have some hope! |

I don't know if this would work with your pop up that you are getting put sometimes there would be a question mark right next to the x in the top right corner. If it does, you can click that and it will take you through a process to remove the pop ups Hope your problems solved. |

Use Spybot Search & Destroy. It has an immunize function that will block most of the spyware site that are out there. If you want to ban a specific site in IE you can go to: Tools > Internet Options > Privacy (Tab) > Sites (Button) Type in the site that you want blocked (adopt.specificclick.net) and press block. That site will be blocked from IE communicating with it. |

I'm sorry. That was a bad answer. That was for blocking cookies. Here's how to restrict a site. Goto Tools > Internet Options > Security In the Web content zone click on Restricted Sites and then click on Sites (Button) to pring up the list of sites. Add *.specificclick.net to the list. The * will match all subdomains from specificclick.net. So that might disallow popups from happening. |

The hosts file option is pretty good, however, I'd be concerned if you're still getting popups. This means you most likely still have spyware. There's software called hijackthis: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/ It will allow you to generate a file which lists a whole bunch things your PC is running. From that, someone may be able to tell you what spyware you have left to remove. |
