If I bicycle for one hour (half an hour in the morning, half an hour
in the evening) for 5 days a week for 48 weeks a year in London, UK...
how many days a year will I get rained on?

Dear rai130-ga,

Nice to see you here again.

I?m not sure I can provide such specific information for your two half
hour rides. There seems to be some further calculations (based on the
below information) which I cannot do. I can, however, give you the
average number of days for the period 1971 - 2000 for London where
more than 1mm of rainfall fell. It comprises the annual and monthly
totals.

Does this meet your needs?

That sounds great. I read somewhere that if one commutes by bicycle in
London one is only likely to be rained on twelve times a year. It just
seemed so few for London!

Dear rai130-ga,

I think your may have read it on the London Cycling Campaign web site.

?Despite its reputation, it really does not rain that much in London.
If you ride to work at the same time every day, the chances are that
you'll get wet about 12 times a year. On those days when it really is
raining heavily, you can always get the bus, tube, train, or take the
car - or just put your rain jacket on get out there, and find out what
fun it can be to ride and not care about getting wet.?

As the figures will show below, that may be right if you?re only going
to be riding for an hour a day (it?s all a matter of odds which is the
calculation I referred to).

Met Office weather data.

1971 - 2000 average for London (Greenwich)
Days with more than 1mm of rain.

Annual Rainfall 106.5 days
Jan	10.9
Feb	8.1
Mar	9.8
Apr 9.3
May	8.5
Jun	8.4
Jul	7.0
Aug	7.2
Sep	8.7
Oct	9.3
Nov	9.3
Dec	10.1

On this link, on the UK map point to the London area and click on the
blue button which says ?Greenwich?

I hope this helps.
I recall I had to cycle to work back in 1975. On the first day the
heavens opened and I was like a drowned rat. The next two years were
no problem at all with two of the hottest summers in record. Perhaps
you?ll be as lucky.

Thanks. I've been biking for a few years now... it definitely seems
like more than 12 days a year.

Many thanks for the tip. Perhaps the rain's got it in for you?
