I was curious if any historical figures were known soley by this name

I'm not sure anyone ever went by just "el". I'm just curious if there
was anyone that did. I'm sure alot historical figures had an el, like
"el pancho" for pancho villa. but I am just interested if any were
ONLY referred to as "el". Thanks again

Are you sure it's simply "El" and not "El Cid"?

I would agree with Secret901:
