Question ID: 563068
What is the amount of Ipods Sales (all product lines) compared to the
amount of Legal subscribers for iTunes store. Either currently or
based on 2004/2005 figures.

I am writing an article for a student newspaper and I want to
highlight the massive difference in numbers between people who have an
Ipod and people who actually download music from the iTunes store.

Hello mattrshaw-ga

I have researched this information for you and the best result I could
find was for March 31 2005. This gave you the number of iPods sold
and the number of tracks sold via their online store. I cannot find
any exact number as to how many people have subscribed to iTunes -
only the number of tracks downloaded.

By dividing the number of tracks downloaded by the number of iPods
sold you get a suprisingly small number and one that would suggest
people were getting their music elsewhere.

Would these results be suitable as an answer for you? If so please
respond to this clarification and I will provide further details.

Hello mattrshaw-ga

Thank-you for your question and accepting my clarification as your answer.

The Apple website released a press release on 28 June 2005 stating:

"iPod and iTunes are leading the digital music revolution. With over
15 million iPods sold as of March 31, the iPod is the world?s most
popular digital music player, and the iTunes Music Store is the number
one online music store with over 430 million songs purchased and
downloaded worldwide."
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/jun/28ipod.html

Therefore by doing a little mathematics on these figures it averages
out to only 29 songs per iPod sold. When you consider that the
average CD released today has 12-15 tracks on it, it would mean that
each iPod is only holding 2-3 albums of material on it. This is
obviously ludicrous and people must be obtaining their music elsewhere
from other legitimate and not so legitimate means (this would include
other online stores, ripping CD's they already own and using P2P
technology to obtain their music).

If you require any further information on this subject please ask for
clarification and I will do my best to respond swiftly.

While working on another answer I also came across this which I
thought might be of interest to you.

"With approximately 1.7 million households using iTunes to download
their digital music, how long will it be before pay services top the
list?"
http://mp3.about.com/od/wheretobuymusic/a/toptensoftware.htm

Coupled with the previous answer this would imply that over 13 million
iPod users do not regularly use iTunes with their iPod player (over 15
million iPods sold, only 1.7 million using iTunes as of June 2005).
