I'm currently compiling a worldwide overview of Polish life centers
throughout the world. We want to detail as much as possible, where
Polish people are living, and if possible, what demografics they have
(sex, age, etc.)

Basically, it is possible to look up these informations in census data
for the countries. But for Brazil I get a little stuck, because all
the data is in Portugese.

The Brazilian census can be accessed at http://www.ibge.gov.br/ the
statistical office of the country.

If someone could please compile the requested information in English
(or German) from official sources, we would be quite happy. It is
important for us that the data is as current as possible. The last
brazilian census was held in 2000, which is okay - if we find newer
data, the better.

When we talk about Polish people, we mean

1) (best case): Language spoken at home: POLISH (like in US census data)
AND/OR
2) Country born in: POLAND
AND/OR
3) Nationality: POLISH

Answers are to be as geographically detailed as possible:

best case: per zip code area

or: Municipalities / districts.

Please also include number of general/overall population per region,
as this allows us to identify a Polish percentage.

Delivery of excel chart would be great.

Hello bsjut-ga

I have visited the http://www.ibge.gov.br/ website and it IS available in English.

In the top right hand corner of the homepage (under the colorful
"Brasil" logo and under the Home link) there is a small English text
label. Click this and the site's default language changes to English.

Unfortunately after searching the site I could not find any breakdown
of the population into different nationalities.

The best information I can supply is a simple 200,000 Polish people live in Brazil.

The data on the US census.gov site (and many other sites I tried) also
does not appear to break the information by language.
http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/idbprint.html

If this is sufficient for an answer please let me know by responding
to this clarification.

No, this is unfortunately not sufficient as an answer.

I'm of course aware that the site is available in English. But the
result tables from the Census 2000 are not. They are available only in
Portuguese. The census data can be found under >population > census.

In regards to the US census: of course the US census can break the
data down by language: http://factfinder.census.gov/ lets you tabulate
the data to your specific needs. The US census software Data Ferret
allows for tabulation and breakdown of the data to zip code level.

Believe me, I'm quite experienced with census data - just not with portuguese. :-)

However, if the data is not in the census 2000 tables, then I require
some other reliable data source.
