Question ID: 56322
In the summer of 1996, I bought a Hewlett Packard Desk Jet 820Cse. It
has given me excellent service and have only had it repaired once
under extended warranty.
I think it is getting a bit old and would like a new HP just like it
but the 2002 version. Which one should I buy?-- HP, of course.

Dear Pendleton,

I went to the HP website, and compared the specs for several printers
from their current product line with those of the Deskjet 820Cse.

After doing so, I discovered that the Deskjet 960Cse is the most like
your current printer.

Here's HP's product blurb for the 820Cse:

"The HP Deskjet 820Cse/820Cxi printer is a fast black and color
personal printer for professionals. It provides laser-like black print
quality and outstanding color graphics on both plain paper and
transparencies. The HP Deskjet 820Cse/820Cxi printer allows MS-DOS (R)
printing in a Windows environment."

And that for the 960Cse:

"Photo-quality printer that delivers outstanding print quality on
everything from text on plain paper to images on photo paper.
Enhanced Color Layering Technology from HP's PhotoREt III printing
technology. HP PhotoREt III combines smaller drop size and vibrant
inks with improved fade resistance to produce fast, outstanding print
quality in all modes and on all media, including incredibly realistic
photo images."

Print speeds are comparable:

820Cse: "Prints up to 6.5 pages-per-minute black text, and up to four
pages-per-minute color"

960Cse: "Black text... 5.7 ppm; Mixed text with color graphics... 4.7
ppm"

Standard print resolution was identical, 600x600 dpi in both cases.
The 960Cse also claims to print color at 2400 dpi mode.

Paper types accepted for the 820Cse are described as "...plain paper,
coated paper, glossy paper, labels, or transparencies." For the
960Cse: "Paper: plain, Inkjet, photo, glossy; Banners, Envelopes,
Transparencies, Labels, Cards."

These sites have exact specifications for both printers, so look them
over and see if the 960Cse meets your needs.

Here's HP's product page for the 960Cse, where you can view a picture
of the printer, and get an idea of the price:

HP also makes a slightly faster (and, of course, more expensive)
printer in the same series, the 990Cse:

One of the two should be an appropriate replacement for your 820Cse. I
wish you good luck in your search!
