Hello turnpurn-ga Thank-you for your question. Ethers are excellent solvents because they have low reactivity. As they are of very low activity no reaction with an alcohol will occur under normal conditions. "Ethers are of very low chemical reactivity. They are hydrolyzed only under drastic conditions like heating with boron tribromide or boiling in hydrobromic acid. Lower mineral acids containing a halogen, such as hydrochloric acid will cleave ethers, but very slowly. Hydrobromic acid and hydroiodic acid are the only two that do so at an appreciable rate." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ether#Chemical_reactions Synthesis of Diols: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diol Synthesis of Aldehydes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldehyde#Preparation Synthesis of Ketones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketone#Synthesis You can see from the above methods of syntheses, none of the common methods involve the use of ether as a reactant. If you require any further assistance on this subject please ask for clarification. |

I remember from school (and not necessarily correctly) ether + alcohol <===> acid + water it's an equilibrium reaction. Maybe my memory isn't completely gone. http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/feb2000/949953665.Ch.r.html |

I believe that's ester + water = acid + alcohol. |
