Hello- This may be a tough one...I need to find a poem/short
story/excerpt from a reader's digest condensed book. It is about a
page and a half long. It is titled "the legacy" or "Legacy" Author
unknown. It is a story of a person who is a legacy in every way, no
names are mentioned in this, but I think it refers to a deceased
father. My father remembers this poem/ story and wanted to locate it to
read at my Uncle's funeral on saturday 9-6-05 I am having no luck
findig it at all....
Apprantly it is very moving and will touch all who hear it and will be
perfect to honor my uncle....who is a legacy to all who know him.
My dad says "I will know when I find it"
Thank you for at least trying :)

The Legacy
John Donne
Adblock

When I died last, and, Dear, I die
As often as from thee I go,
Though it be but an hour ago,
And Lovers' hours be full eternity,
I can remember yet, that I
     Something did say, and something did bestow;
Though I be dead, which sent me, I should be
Mine own executor and legacy.

I heard me say, "Tell her anon,
That myself, that is you, not I,
Did kill me," and when I felt me die,
I bid me send my heart, when I was gone,
But alas could there find none,
     When I had ripp'd me, and search'd where hearts should lie;
It kill'd me again, that I who still was true,
In life, in my last will should cozen you.

Yet I found something like a heart,
But colors it, and corners had,
It was not good, it was not bad,
It was intire to none, and few had part.
As good as could be made by art
It seem'd, and therefore for our losses sad,
I meant to send this heart in stead of mine,
But oh, no man could hold it, for 'twas thine.

I just want you to know that several of my friends and I tried really
hard to source your poem for you but we weren't successful. Were you
able to get a copy in time from somewhere else? I think you have
honored your Uncle simply by trying and he must have been a special
person for you to want to do this for him.
