Hi, Joan57 !

I couldn't find precise figures for you, especially since there are so
many small companies now selling olive oil directly on the web, but
here are some useful details and links which you - or another
researcher - may find of use.

http://www.oliveoilnews.com

which links with the site:

http://www.oliveoilsource.com

The Olive Oil Source.
voice - 415-461-6267 Fax 415-461-1815 390 Vista Grande, Greenbrae, Ca
94904

lists 262 olive growers. producers and processors within the USA with
hyperlinks to details of products, company contacts etc. The page was
updated 08/19/02 so is very current. Each companies brand may have one
or more associated products, for example The Reas Olive Ranch has five
products.

For example, clicking on "Abreu Vineyard" (Rutherford CA) in the list
gives their address, varities grown, and age and number of trees, as
well as contacts. Ckicking on their product name "Madrona Ranch" gives
details of the brand (kosher - no extra virgin - yes).

Most companies they list are in California, with one in Oregon, four
in Texas , one in Connecticut, one in Arizona, one Hawaii, and a
couple with no state listed.

This site also lists International growers and organisations.

The site of Antinori Agricultural Farm, Montefalco in Umbria, Italy

http://www.agricolamontefalco.com/plant/oil_consum.asp

has a chart on worldwide consumption of olive oil in non-traditional
producer countries and says:

"World wide consumption of olive oil is estimated at about 2,2 million
tons, of which 69% is concentrated in European Union Countries: these
producer countries cover alone about 66% of world wide consumption.
The various Southern Mediterranean extra-communitary countries cover
14% of this total and consumption is mainly confined to these producer
countries. The remaining 17% of the total is registered from countries
outside Europe, due to the progressive increase of this percentage."

They list the principal suppliers to the United States for the 1997-98
as:

ITALY 70.5 %
SPAIN 13.3%
TURKEY	7.7%
GREECE 3.0%
MOROCCO	2.0%
OTHERS	3.5%
