Hello albertacanuck-ga,

As I progressed in the research on your question I repeatedly came
across a reference to the extremely high divorce rate for deaf/HOH
couples. I even found references that the divorce rate is 88% or close
to 90%. After much digging I found the source of these statistics. It
comes from ?The Deaf Population of the United States? by Jerome Schein
and Marcus Delk that was published in 1974 by the National Association
of the Deaf. I have not been able to find anything more up to date and
it is clear that these are the statistics that are universally quoted.

I?ve included several resources for you that discuss divorce between
deaf and hard of hearing couples to give you a sense of what the
current thinking is in the field.

Wishing you well.

Various statistics concerning the deaf

90% Rate
(Contributed by Richard L Cohen rcc@whscad1.att.com at 23 Aug 1994.)

There was a question from where the 90% Deaf-Deaf Marriage rate came
from. The following statistics are from "The Deaf Population of the
United States," by Jerome Schein and Marcus Delk, published in 1974 by
the NAD.

I don't know from the limited information how the sample of over a
thousand deaf people were drawn from, but the satistics are as
follows:

Married Males deafened under the age of 3:
82% had deaf spouses 7% had hard of hearing spouses

Married Males deafened at the age of 3-18:
77% had deaf spouses 6% had hard of hearing spouses

Married Females deafened under the age of 3:
86% had deaf spouses 6% had hard of hearing spouses

Married Females deafened at the age of 3-18:
65% had deaf spouses 9% had hard of hearing spouses

Schein also noted that the divorce rates were far higher for marriages
in which one spouse is hearing than for those in which both are deaf.

Remember that these are 1992 statistics, and no conclusions can be
made as to "WHY?" from the information. And I don't know where to find
updated statistics.

Dating Sweet Deaf guy

Sounded sweet, but you DO need to get involved in deaf world. And that
your honey should try to get involved with hearing world. These two
things that needs to get priority straight. Because of culture
conflicts between hearing and deaf world! That is why there is about
88% divorce rate going on between hearing and deaf spouse within 5
years time frame. So, my suggest to dive in deaf world and see if you
can deal with them. Then you would have better idea how your
relationship with that sweet guy would come out. Finally suggest to
start with friend first and let time go by and you will know for sure.
Rather dive right into relationship and that heart shaped baloon would
burst and end of story with LOTS of grieves, worth it? You decide.

·	Personally, I hope to receive the necessary education to pursue and
add a marriage counseling to my ministry. The present divorce rate for
a Deaf and hearing couple is over 90% and since more and more Deaf are
marrying hearing people. the need for knowledgeable marriage
counseling is clearly evident.

The Tough Got Going

And then, he met Debby. She could not understand much of what he said
on their first date, but by the end of the evening knew she was going
to marry him. The courtship progressed with Morse code signals over
the telephone, and marry him she did -- in spite of a discouraging
divorce rate of almost 90 per cent for marriages between the deaf and
the hearing.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Substance Abusers Part 1:

The Population and the ProblemImpulsivity is an often-noted
characteristic of the pre-lingually deaf, but it does not normally
assume significant proportions (e.g. criminal behavior), and it may
well reflect developmental delays rather than any permanent character
traits. There is no evidence of increased psychosocial problems among
the deaf; their divorce rate, for example, mirrors that of the general
population. Despite continuing language problems in some cases, the
evidence suggests that deafness delays, but does not limit, the
development of intelligence.

Since Deaf is a Culture... should they Read KJV?

What you mentioned is VERY common. Divorce rate for the deaf community
is very high. I fault professional educators for this because I knew
for years that deaf culture prefer to use ASL while at the same time,
they don't make a habit of reading or make efforts to learn english in
order to live in the hearing world. There are people like me who got
lucky because our parents FORCED me to read and learned how to
communicate both hearing world and deaf culture.

Can you tell me how many deaf people there are in the United States?

This seemingly straightforward question does not have a simple answer.
The answer is not simple because various definitions of deafness are
used, depending on where you look for answers, each leading to a
different estimate for the number of deaf people in the United States.
Below, we discuss the various surveys used to estimate the size of the
deaf population and report the answers they offer.

***** This is an excellent long article that discusses the
difficulties of gathering statistical information about the deaf.

When one partner is deaf the other is hearing.
