Hi, me and my girlfriend live in Canada. Saskatoon Saskatchewan to be exact(In case it matters). We are both Canadian Citizen's. We would like to move to Tempe, Arizona in the United States and both work and live there without losing our Canadian Citizenship. I am a commercial pilot and my girlfriend is a medical office assistant. I fly for a airborne geophysics company (survey pilot) but would be willing to take any type of aviation flying job. What do we have to do in order to be able to do this? | |

HI, The official site of the US Citizenship and Immigration Service has all the information: http://uscis.gov/graphics/ And it also warns against private sites and agencies that offer assistance. Having said that, I will still add this site since it addresses your question and can help you know what to look for on the uscis site. Myoarin |

The problem in coming here and hoping to find a job does not lie in your citizenship, it's in getting a "Green Card" or the right to work in the USA. I have known a handful of pilots that are not US citizens that fly for the airlines and they needed a green card to even apply for any pilot job in this country. For the US Gov't FAQ page specifically on work permits/Green Cards, go here- http://uscis.gov/graphics/faqsgen.htm#greencard Although you may qualify flight experience wise for many pilot positions here, you will be hard pressed to find any employer that will sponsor a pilot to get a work permit as there as many, many pilots looking for jobs that have citizenship or a green card already. In a post 9/11 environment, there are still thousands of pilots on furlough and competition for any flying job is brisk. Pilot positions, espeically in the private sector, are quite often had by personal contacts before the job ever makes it out to the 'for hire' ads. Additionally, you would need to convert your Canadian certificates/licenses to FAA ones to fly for hire in the USA. For more information on that, visit- http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/foreign_license_verification/ To see pilot job listings, and their requirements, visit these popular sites- www.climbto350.com www.findapilot.com www.avcrew.com www.avianation.com www.pilotcrewjobs.com www.planejobs.com www.USaviation.com Additionally, these sites are are a must for any pilot in the US job market. They are the premier webpages for interview information and 'gouge': www.aviationinterviews.com www.willfly4food.com |

aviatrix, thanks for your comment. I am well aware of the aviation industy in the United States. It is much similar to Canada. I have also recently talked to a FAA office in Oklahoma City and the conversion doesnt seem to be much at all. I have reviewed the link you posted and seems to me as you mentioned. I need a green card. Thanks for you comment again. I greatly appreciate it. I am going to give that a good read and probally more than once. The more I look into this the more unlikely it looks for us to move to the United States if I want to continue to fly for a living. I thought there may be some alternative way to be able to accomplsh this. |
