Hello ted99-ga
Thank-you for your question.
DVD+R means that the DVD's are of the +R write-once specification,
there are two write-once specifications, -R and +R. +R/W allow the
user to rewrite to the disk.
"Pioneer produced the first DVD writer in 1997. It used the DVD-R
format. The DVD-RW came later. In 1999 the DVD Forum was formed. It
embraced the DVD-R format.
In the summer of 1997 Philips lead a group (included Sony and
Hewlett-Packard) that split away from other disk manufacturers because
of disputed over DVD writing standards. They formed the DVD+RW
alliance. Since then Dell, MCC/Verbatim, Mitsubishi, Ricoh, Thomson,
and Yamaha have joined the group. They developed the DVD+RW DVD
writing format and later the DVD+R format which was derived from the
DVD+RW format."

"DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 89%
of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs."

The 8x means that should your DVD writer support it then the writer
can write eight times faster than a 1x writer. You can only write to
the DVD's at 8x speed if your recorder is able to do this. The manual
of your recorder or writer will specify what speeds your hardware can
run at.
To burn a full DVD at 1x speed takes approximately 45 minutes, at 8x
speed it takes approximately 8 minutes. The fastest DVD writers I am
aware of on the consumer market write at 16x speed.
"Extended Play 240 mins" means that when the DVD is used in
conjunction with the extended play feature on your DVD recorder you
will be able to record 240 minutes of video/footage.
