That music is protected by copyright, so any free download site for it
would most likely be illegal. Google Answers does not provide answers
that point to illegal sites.

Do you already know about services with free 30-day trials? Or would
a sufficient answer be a service with a free 30-day trial, on which
you can download Lord of the Rings music during the trial?

Do you need the entire soundtrack for all three films? Or would a
certain number of songs be sufficient?

Does the music need to be in MP3 format?

Do you use AOL? (There may be a suitable service specific to AOL.)

Hello mr_anderson-ga

Thank-you for your question and your clarification.

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has produced a
list of all the legal places where you can download music from. The
list appears rather long but can actually be reduced in size as the
catalogues of music you can download is duplicated in many stores.
The list can be found here:
http://www.riaa.com/news/newsletter/062503_e.asp

The issue is further compounded by the fact that there are numerous
different file formats that you can download - WMA is probably the
most common download format even though people still talk about MP3.
Luckily it is a fairly easy process to convert between the different
music formats if the music has been legally downloaded and is
DRM-free. (DRM is a copy protection mechanism to stop people
illegally swapping music files.)
http://mp3-express.com/articles/Beginners-Guide-to-Music-File-Formats.html

Some of the sites also allow you to have a free trial before paying
for your music, as you indicated that this was what you required I
will list these below with the free trial time period.

1) AOL members
go to AOL Keyword: MusicNet to sign up for a 30-day FREE trial
http://music.aol.com/

2) eMusic [*]
http://www.emusic.com - 14-day trial

3) Napster - 7-day trial
http://www.napster.com

4) MusicMatch - 7-day trial
http://www.musicmatch.com/download/ondemand_intro.htm?os=pc&mode=input&BTD=1&DID=

5) Yahoo! Music - 7-day trial
http://music.yahoo.com/unlimited/

6) Rhapsody - limited free tracks per month, 14-day trial
http://www.rhapsody.com/index.html

7) MSN Music - 30-day Radio Plus trial
http://music.msn.com/

[*] no online search facility so I was unable to determine whether
they had the Lord of the Rings soundtracks.

If you were interested in audiobooks then you should check out the
Audible.com website which offers a 3 free audiobook trial.

With all of the free trials you will be charged if you do not cancel
your trials before your period expires (remember to read the boring
small print to determine exactly when you have to cancel!). I would
also recommend trying as many of them as you can before deciding on
which one to stick with. Each site has its own little quirks and some
I found more difficult to use than others.

If you wished to purchase your music without a trial period, you may
wish to look into http://www.allofmp3.com and http://www.mp3search.ru
which offer great value for money if you are legally entitled to
download from them from your country.

If you require any further information on this subject please ask for
clarification and I will do my best to respond swiftly.
