Hello Awayand,

According to the ?Go to Mexico? site, you need not worry about
finding reliable lab work in Mexico City. While these hospitals do not
actually LIST the fact that they do, I feel quite confident that the
hospitals listed perform HbA1c tests. HbA1c is a very common test and
diabetes is very prevalent in Mexico. HbA1c is called ?hemoglobina
A1c? and ?hemoglobina glucosilada? in Mexico. Whichever hospital you
select, try to use the same lab each time you have your blood drawn,
as normal values and methodology can vary from lab to lab.

?10.75% de los mexicanos de 20 a 69 años tienen algún tipo de diabetes
mellitus, lo que equivale a una población de más de 5 millones y medio
de personas con la enfermedad. (Datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud
ENSA 2000).?
(Translated)
?10.75% of Mexicans from 20-69 years of age have some type of diabetes
mellitus, which equals over 5.5 million people with the disease in
Mexico.?
Mexico City has the highest rate of all Mexico, 14.5% of the capital
city has diabetes.

?When it comes to medical and health care in Mexico, many
expatriates have their doubts and their fears. Coming from countries
with some of the best health care and hospitals in the world, many
expatriates just don't know what to expect in Mexico. The truth of the
matter is that there's no need to panic. In fact Mexico has some very
fine hospitals that offer excellent care, and also for considerably
less in terms of cost. Have a gander at our insurance section for more
information.?

?In terms of hospitals, Mexico City has two world-class hospitals,
both with a fully bilingual, English-speaking staff of doctors. The
ABC (American British Cowdray) Hospital is located in Colonia America,
right next to the American School, while the Angeles Hospital is
located in the Pedregal, in the south of Mexico City.?

?Mexico City has several private hospitals with excellent service
such as ABC, Hospital Espanol, Los Angeles, Humana, and Medica Sur.
There is also the Red Cross, which is the first to be called to an
accident. The ambulance service as well as the emergency service has
no set fee and you pay it on a totally voluntary basis. The ambulance
will take you to whatever hospital you wish or, depending on your
status, they'll take you to their own base hospital.?

Shriner?s hospitals have an excellent reputation in the US, and there
is no reason to believe that the one in Mexico City will not reliably
test your HbA1C. I understand this is a children?s hospital, but I
feel they can do your labwork for you. Most hospitals, even children?s
hospitals can accommodate adult labwork.
I would call this number in the US and inquire: Shrine Club, toll-free
information numbers: in the United States, 1-800-237-5055 ( or in
Canada, 1-800-361-7256 )

The US Embassy also lists hospitals in Mexico City, and says they
speak English as well.
