Dear reb1045-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question.

Consider this post about famous southern food TV chef and restaurateur
Paul Deen (which I happen to wholeheartedly agree with):

?If you get the Food Network, Paula Dean of Savannah has a TV show
called Paula's Home Cooking. I do not consider South Carolina to have
the southern drawl of the non-coastal area. But then many Southerners
that live in large cities do not have as much as rural areas.

Ms. Dean owns a restaurant in Savannah, and I would think her accent
is very typical of South Carolina.?

So if you have FOOD NETWORK check out Paula Deen?s show ?Paula?s Home
Cooking?. Paul hails from Savannah, Georgia but that is literally just
across the bridge from South Carolina and she does have a fairly
typical (and endearing, I might add) regional accent.

In addition you will find several audio files on this page featuring
news and talk-radio webcasts from South Carolina ? probably more than
you care to listen to ? but you?ll definitely get to hear how the good
folks of South Carolina sound:

Savannah is in Georgia, NOT South Carolina.

You're right! Savannah "is" in Georgia. But it also happens to be less
than 100 yards from South Carolina and millions of "typically
sounding" South Carolinians.

The Charleston area accent is a little different from the rest of the
south (including Savannah). Paula's accent is a good example of the
"deep south" accent but it not typical of the true native Charleston
accent.

People who grew up here actually appear to have some northern
influence in their accent. For example they will prononuce the word
park as it would be said in Boston. When saying the word Charleston
they will use a harsher "r" sound that most of the rest of the state.

I am not sure where this comes from butit appears to be pretty
exclusive to our part of the state. If you go north to Myrtle Beach or
south to Savannah you don't hear it as often.
