In the late 60's, Sam the Sham & The Pharoahs had a hit with Little
Red Riding Hood. My questions are: do I remember correctly that J
Geils/Peter Wolf covered this song quite successfully (in the late
70's I'm guessing?)? Or was it someone else who covered it and had the
cover hit? And whoever it was, what release is it on? I would like to
hear a clip of any results, but I sure do hear Peter Wolf's voice in
my head doing this song...

Could you be remembering The Standells' version?

The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits doesn't show any version other than
the original through the year 2000, and the All Music Guide doesn't
show any cover recording by either the J. Geils Band or Peter Wolf.
Does this answer your question, or are you looking for someone to
track down the version you remember, even if it was neither a hit nor
recorded by the Geils Band or Wolf?

This is so interesting. This is what I will do. The Standells of
course had "Dirty Water" as a hit about the Charles in Boston, where I
lived for 5 years in the last half of the 70's, which may be why I
think of J Geils, although I cannot quite tell from the clip. So, I am
going to split the qestion, and accept The Standells (thanks once
again PinkFreud!) as the answer here. Efn, I would like it very much
if you could track down any other versions from that era; I wouldn't
be surprised if it wasn't a top 40; Boston was a hot rock community at
the time, and what was a hit there may not have been such a big deal
elsewhere. I will post question now. Thank you both for such a quick
response.

Hello 1skee,

Love that dirty water .... Boston (okay, a suburb of Boston) was my
home too for several years.

Anyway, to make the answer official, I'll repost the link for The
Standells' album on Amazon, plus a link to another clip of their
version of "Lil' Red Riding Hood":

Although this album was recorded in 1966, it's possible that you
happened upon a Boston radio station that played lots of Standells.
(Did you know, by the way, that they were actually from Los Angeles?)

difference in gender :-) )

Search strategy:

Search on MSN Music, Yahoo! Audio, Tower Records, and Google for:

"little red riding hood"
"red riding hood"
"lil red riding hood"
standells

Justaskscott! First let me APOLOGIZE for putting in pinkfrued's name
instead of yours!!!! I was in a hurry, and I associate you two so
closely that my fingers were obviously typing without being fully
connected to my forebrain!!! I am so sorry!!!! But thank you so much
for this exciting answer! You may remember my fascination with covers,
so really, in your usual excellent fashion, you killed 2 birds with
one stone for me! Thanks! (gender is so unimportant, don't you
think??? *voice rising hopefully in embarrassment*?)
