I need to know the name and location of the Court (or other public
institution?) that houses records with the following reference:
Book# 218
Page# 108
Court# 801VC00543
Filing date 11/2003
Amount $2,980
That's all the information I have to go on. I inquired at local court
houses and keeper of deeds, but neither recognized this reference
information. |

How and where (in what context) did you come across this reference?
In what area are you located?

In applying for a loan, I was told that this liability of $2,980
appeared on a credit check. It might be a lien? I'm really not sure.
The loan agent told me he had no further information about what the
$2,980 was for -- he simply said: "Go to the clerk of courts, look up
the book #, page #, etc., and there you will find the name of a
Plaintiff. Then you can contact the Plaintiff and figure out what's
going on."
I personally went to the Clerk of Courts at the Washington, DC
Courthouse and also the Recorder of Deeds. In neither place did they
recognize the presumable "Court #" that I reported in my question.
They basically had no idea how to help me.

Doesn't sound like your loan agent was all that helpful.
I couldn't find a way to decode the mysterious item on your credit
report. However, thanks to federal law, you now have the right to
access a free copy of your report from the companies that compile
them, and to challenge any item on the report that looks to be in
error (or is simply unknown!).
To start the process, head to:
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
and follow the steps outlined there. Note that there are three
distinct companies, and to see each of your three reports, you need to
repeat the process three times.
The reports differ somewhat, so one company may have only cryptic
information on the $2,980 item, another may not mention it at all,
while the third might have a full description of what the d**m thing
is.
Give that a try. Challenge the item, if no one identifies it. Let me
know how things work out.
Good luck,
