The cd/dvd drive no longer works on my mom's HP ze1000 notebook. It
does not read or burn cds. I have attempted to update the
drivers/firmware via the support site but to no avail. I have also ran
a number of registry repair programs and still nothing. Can anyone
offer some help or advice here? Thanks.

Does Windows (I assume Windows...) still see the CD-ROM?

IF not then likely the CD-ROM has failed and you'll need to replace
it. If it's under wantary call HP and get them to ship you out a new
one if not still call them and ask how much for a new one (It's a good
idea to now how much to start with) then shop around on computer parts
stores. (www.tigerdirect.com, www.cdr.com) IF you really need the
CD-ROM to work this week then buy an external USB CD-ROM.
