My AOL filing cabinet is not showing any of my saved e-mails. I reset
my account with a new filing cabinet so i would be able to save
current files and have dragged the old cabinet onto my desktop. I
thinkif i could make a disc of the file, i might be able to send it to
someone who could help me open my old files. Unfortunately i cannot
burn a disc because "some data cannot be read or written". i really
need some of my old files and am happy to hire someone. I live in NYC.
Any ideas.

The error message you're receiving seems to be a relatively
rare one on a Mac, and may indicate a problem with your CD
media or the CD-R itself. Here are some suggestions from
the ReunionTalk newsgroup:

"Here is the info from the Apple Knowledge Base. It's hard to
tell from here. It might be as simple as you have a bad batch
of blank CD's or as bad as there being something wrong with
your CD writer. As Mike said, you have an unusual problem.
You could test for the simple problem by copying to a blank
CD from another batch or to different media (such as a Zip
disk or a floppy). If it won't copy to the other blank CD,
you may have a hardware problem.

"Type -36 error (I/O Errors (bummers)"

"This file is having difficulty while either reading from
the drive or writing to the drive. The file may have been
improperly written data to the drive or the hard drive or
disk may be damaged. This is almost always indicative of
a media error (hard error on the disk). Sometimes (rarely)
 it is transient."

"Solutions: Try copying the file to another drive. Use a
disk recovery software, such as Disk First Aid to examine
the disk. You can try rebooting with all extensions off.
Once in a while this will allow you to read the data.
The file in question should be restored from a backup that
was stored on a differnt disk. Regular backups can reduce
the time to recover from this error."

...and:

Some types of files:
"...can be VERY large! It may be that you have exceeded the
size of some buffer or other. I would suggest, if your file
is over, say 20 Mb, that you

 1) Stuff it and
 2) patition it into segments no larger than that.

Then save them all to the CD"

Let me know where this takes you...

I have had some issues with my personal filing cabinet years ago. I
can't remember specifically how it was resolved but this may point you
to the right direction.... I believe the personal filing cabinets
have an ending of .pfc. One way to access an old PFC is to
temporarily move or rename your current file and changing the back
up/old file as a primary/current file. AOL was able to help me with
this long time ago. You may want to try the Online Live Help. By the
way, the lastest version of AOL may have changed the name of these
files (it is no longer .pfc; it just says "File" on my system).

If you have the lastest AOL, the location of your current PFC is probably here...
