Since you're seeing "Generic USB Device" in the Device Manager,
I have to wonder if that's what you normally see with the Sargent
enclosure when there's no drive in it, or when there is.
Is this a hot-wired enclosure, that is, can you plug a drive in
it while Windows is up and running? Or do you have to have the
drive in place when you boot up to Windows? Either way, I would
be curious to know what changes can be observed in the Device
Manager when you use the enclosure with a working drive.
Does it change from "Generic USB Device" to something else?
If so, what does it change to? Does it name the Sargent enclosure,
or the hard drive itself? Or perhaps it retains the description
"Generic USB Device" and acknowledges the new drive under "Disk
Drives"?
The only USB device I have is a webcam, and the only time I've
seen "Generic USB Device" is when Windows fails to recognize
the cam, and the indicator light on the cam fails to light up.
A reboot usually fixes this. Then "Generic USB Device" shows
up under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". When Windows
recognizes the cam, it shows up under "Human Interface Devices".
So I'm wondering if the enclosure itself is something that
Windows is failing to recognize (does the enclosure come with
drivers?), or if it's only meant to be recognized when there's
a drive inside it.
Let me know where this takes you...
